"Those who wonder how the international community failed so dramatically in Afghanistan need look no further … Losing Afghanistan explores the arguments for and against intervention and highlights the difficulty of establishing unity of purpose and effort in such demanding circumstances. Above all, it poses a question: how can we in the West claim we know so much, yet demonstrate in Afghanistan that we understand so little?" – General (retd) Sir Jack Deverell OBE, former Commander-in-Chief of Allied Forces Northern Europe
"A wonderful book of insightful essays on Afghanistan from an outsider lens." – Ezatullah Adib, head of research at Integrity Watch Afghanistan and national country representative at the World Association for Public Opinion Research
"The strategic question posed by these brilliant essays is: how can the doctrine of liberal intervention be reframed to ensure the West intervenes overseas to manage future humanitarian calamities for reasons beyond just national security?" – Brigadier (retd) Justin Hedges OBE
    ***
When Taliban forces took Kabul on 15 August 2021, it marked the end of the Western intervention that had begun nearly twenty years earlier with the US-led invasion.
The fall of Afghanistan triggered a seismic shock in the West, where US President Joe Biden announced an end to America's involvement in conflicts overseas. In Afghanistan itself it produced terror for the future for those who had worked with and grown up under the coalition-supported administration.
Now, with the country spiralling into economic collapse and famine, Losing Afghanistan is a plea for us to keep our gaze on the plight of the people of Afghanistan and to understand how action and inaction in the West shaped the fate of the nation.
Why was Afghanistan lost? Can it be regained? And what happens next? Edited by international development expert Brian Brivati, this collection of twenty-one essays by analysts, politicians, soldiers, commentators and practitioners – interspersed with powerful eyewitness testimony from Afghan voices – explains what happened in Afghanistan and why, and what the future holds both for its people and for liberal intervention.

The weather governs our lives. It fills gaps in conversations, determines our dress, and influences our architecture. No matter how much our lives may have moved indoors, no matter how much we may rely on technology, we still monitor the weather. Wait Five Minutes: Weatherlore in the Twenty-First Century draws from folkloric, literary, and scientific theory to offer up new ways of thinking about this most ancient of phenomena.

Weatherlore is a concept that describes the folk beliefs and traditions about the weather that are passed down casually among groups of people. From detailing personal experiences at picnics and suburban lawns to critically analyzing storm stories, novels, and flood legends, contributors offer engaging multidisciplinary perspectives on weatherlore.

As we move further into the twenty-first century, an increasing awareness of climate change and its impacts on daily life calls for a folkloristic reckoning with the weather and a rising need to examine vernacular understandings of weather and climate. Weatherlore helps us understand and shape global political conversations about climate change and biopolitics at the same time that it influences individual, group, and regional lives and identities. We use weather, and thus its folklore, to make meaning of ourselves, our groups, and, quite literally, our world.

“You don’t need a teacher perpetually. You need them to show you how to get through the doorway, but once you get through the doorway, you’re on your own. Then you have to grow and experience Enlightenment. Then you come back—if you want to go through a higher doorway—and so on and so on. They show you how to refine yourself until you’re able to enter into nirvana on your own. Then no more teacher. Guess what? Only Enlightenment everywhere.” Rama-Dr. Frederick Lenz, 1992
We think that the classic Enlightenment of the Buddha is far beyond our reach. What if it wasn’t?
As more and more people have found meditation and mindfulness beneficial, there has been little information on the underlying process, which Dr. Frederick Lenz (1950-1998), known to his students as Rama, called “self-discovery.” Self-discovery is the pathway to enlightenment, in which you realize that your ego is like an island in the middle of an ocean. Each meditation is taking a swim in that ocean. Self-discovery is becoming the ocean. While many of the things he taught can be found in spiritual books, many cannot, and none all in the same place.
At its core, this book presents the self-discovery process. Rama recorded 120 talks for his students covering it; the book's nearly 200 excerpts are him speaking to his students. Each chapter is devoted to an interdependent group of topics and presents the different aspects that he emphasized at different times, so that you get a complete picture. The chapters are arranged in a developmental order, beginning with the basics and culminating in the samadhis.
"Beyond the world of thought and sensorial impressions, there are planes and dimensions of perfect light, knowledge and radiant perfection. Meditation is simply a process of moving your awareness field from the awareness of this world, from the awareness of time and space, into eternity, into the eternal dimensions.” Rama-Dr. Frederick Lenz, 1992

This bundle contains the following titles:
Freedom of Speech: Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of democratic societies, integral to the exercise of individual autonomy and the pursuit of truth. At its core, it is the right to express ideas, opinions, and beliefs without fear of government reprisal or censorship. This principle is enshrined in numerous legal documents, most notably the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees "the freedom of speech, or of the press," protecting the individual’s right to speak openly in the public sphere.
Children’s Rights: Children represent the future of our societies, yet they remain among the most vulnerable and marginalized populations worldwide. The protection of children's rights has become one of the most critical global issues in the 21st century, demanding urgent attention and action. While significant progress has been made in raising awareness of children's rights, millions of children still suffer from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and deprivation. This complex and multifaceted issue requires an in-depth understanding of the challenges children face, as well as the actions needed to safeguard their well-being.
