Sinopse

Set against the turbulent backdrop of the French Revolution, "The Scarlet Pimpernel" is a thrilling adventure novel that intricately weaves romance, heroism, and identity. The narrative follows the daring exploits of the elusive hero, the Scarlet Pimpernel, as he orchestrates the escape of aristocrats from the guillotine, cleverly disguising his true identity. Baroness Orczy's rich prose evokes the perilous climate of revolutionary France, while her intricate characterizations render both the protagonists and the antagonists vividly dynamic. The book, published in 1905, signifies a pivotal moment in literature, blending elements of mystery and historical fidelity while contributing to the expanding genre of adventure fiction of its time. Baroness Orczy, a Hungarian-born British novelist and playwright, was deeply influenced by her own aristocratic heritage and the political upheavals of her time. Her unique perspective as a descendant of a noble family who fled to England in the wake of the Revolution informs her portrayal of loyalty and sacrifice in the face of tyranny. Orczy's experiences undoubtedly inspired her to explore themes of courage and the complexities of moral choice within her characters. Both readers seeking action-packed narratives and those fond of historical intricacies will find "The Scarlet Pimpernel" an engrossing read. “Nothing is so good as it seems beforehand.”
Silas Marner is a simple weaver from Lantern Yard, an impoverished area of Northern England. He is the main protagonist who is wrongly accused of being a robber. Silas loses his sweetheart, reputation, and as a result, has to move out of the town. He dedicates the next fifteen years of his life to earning money. Despite developing an unhealthy obsession, he is still the same just and honest person albeit rather stingy by this time as monetary enrichment became the sole purpose of his being. But when injustice strikes again, Silas is about to change his perception of life forever. What he first considers to be the ultimate disaster of his existence, turns into the thing that gives a new meaning to his life. This moral tale will set things in the right place presenting a picture of justice and love that rise above ignorance and greed.
The work is regarded as a pastoral novel and a moral tale with fairytale elements. A notable feature is Eliot's representation of the effects of industrialisation. Indeed, upon Silas's return to his home town in his old age, he can barely recognise the town where new buildings and factories have been erected. The author deploys her signature technique of setting the novel in a more distant past, which gives her the advantage of scope and hindsight. Published a year before Hugo's world-famous Les Misérables, Silas Marner tackles many similar tropes as effectively and authentically but in a more condensed form – in particular, finding the meaning in life when there seems to be nothing left to hold on to.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born in Florida, Missouri on the 30th November 1835 and is far better known by his pen name of Mark Twain. An American writer and humorist of the first order he is perhaps best known for his novels ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ and its sequel ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ which are often described with that mythic line The Great American Novel.
Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri which would later provide the backdrop to these great novels. Apprenticed to a printer he also became a typesetter and then a master riverboat pilot on the Mississippi. Later, heading west with his brother Orion to make his fortune, he failed at gold mining and instead turned to journalism and thence his true calling as a writer of humorous stories where his wit and humor sparkled from every paragraph, his craft evident with every page and punctured target.
A staunch supporter of copyright protections this helped him keep much of the wealth his writing created, though much money was also lost on investments that he pursued in his love for science and technology as well as investing in his own inventions.
Twain was born during a visit by Halley’s comet, and he predicted that he would go out with it as well. He died the day after its subsequent return on 21st April 1910, at his house, Stormfield, located in Redding, Connecticut.
