Sinopsis

Lost Planes explores aviation's most perplexing aircraft disappearances, offering insights into aviation safety, technological limitations, and our quest to understand the inexplicable. The book investigates cases like Amelia Earhart's vanishing and the Star Dust incident in the Andes, detailing facts and theories surrounding these unsolved aviation mysteries. Notably, some disappearances suggest that even with advanced technology, human error, mechanical failure, and unpredictable environmental factors can lead to catastrophic losses.

The book begins by introducing concepts in aviation investigation and search and rescue, then dissects individual cases, analyzing aircraft types, crew experience, flight paths, and weather conditions. Lost Planes uniquely emphasizes the human element, examining the psychological impact on families and investigators. Drawing from investigation reports, eyewitness accounts, and expert analysis, it connects to history, military strategy, and forensic science, providing a holistic view. The book avoids sensationalism, presenting theories in an evidence-based manner and is aimed at aviation enthusiasts, military history buffs, and true crime enthusiasts.

By understanding the factors behind these disappearances, Lost Planes offers practical applications for aviation safety and risk assessment.

The US racial wealth gap is large, and it's compounding. It's time to close it. Minding the Wealth Gap shines a light on people doing this important work and explores how you can get involved too.

Generations of public and private practices have left Black households $15 trillion and 400 years behind white households. Engaging storytelling backed by data, Minding the Wealth Gap highlights the wide-ranging impact of this lack of wealth parity. It explores the intricate connections between issues such as housing disparities, employment opportunities, education, investment barriers, social networks, and over-policing, all of which contribute to the staggering wealth gap between Black and white households.

Investment professional Cliff Goins IV shines a spotlight on nine Black entrepreneurs and executives who are actively working to bridge this chasm:

    • Kedra Newsom Reeves is a highly accomplished management consultant by day, serving as a partner at the Boston Consulting Group, where she drives holistic solutions to wealth creation.
    • Mark Wilson became an accidental entrepreneur, then used his platform to empower economic mobility for under-resourced team members.
    • C-suite executive Selena Cuffe is a world traveler and a talented business leader. She is a poster child for the power of cultivating diverse talent.
    • Lee Henderson leveraged his role as partner at Ernst & Young LLP to help launch a network of resources to accelerate the growth of underserved ethnic minority-owned businesses.
    • Shundrawn Thomas champions underdogs and unleashes access to financial and human capital as CEO of The Copia Group, a private investment firm.
    • Tony Wilkins, an advisor for Google for Startups, is an entrepreneur whisperer, imparting wisdom and money that they need to flourish.
    • Corporate lawyer turned entrepreneur George Fatheree III advocates for real estate justice and turbocharges home and land ownership.
    • Small business banker Steve Hall locates the diamonds in the rough, putting capital to work in overlooked communities.
    • Serial entrepreneur and sage Robert Blackwell Jr. is compelling large organizations to "just do business" and free the enterprises.

These "gap closers" have much to teach us, having pioneered initiatives such as empowering economic mobility, advocating for homeownership, and championing economic parity. Minding the Wealth Gap is both a powerful catalyst and a call to arms, urging America's entrepreneurs, executives, government officials, and other leaders to join these efforts and take meaningful steps toward a more equitable future for all.

Born and educated in Indiana, Riley received his teacher's certificate and, later, graduated from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. He served several Baptist churches in Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois before taking the pastorate at the First Baptist Church in Minneapolis, MN, in 1897.
Father Divine (1876 - 1965), also known as Reverend Major Jealous Divine, was an African American spiritual leader from 1907 until his death. He founded the International Peace Mission movement, formulated its doctrine of economic independence and racial equality, and oversaw its growth from a small and predominantly black congregation into a multiracial and international church.
Homer Alvan Rodeheaver (October 4, 1880 - December 18, 1955) was an American evangelist, music director, music publisher, composer of gospel songs, and pioneer in the recording of sacred music. The Greek Famine of World War II...

In the autumn of 1940, Greece found itself thrust into the chaos of World War II when Italian forces, under the command of Benito Mussolini, launched an invasion from Albania. Despite being outnumbered and under-equipped, Greek forces mounted a formidable defense, pushing the Italians back and even advancing into Albanian territory. This unexpected success humiliated Mussolini and prompted Adolf Hitler to intervene, leading to a swift German invasion in April 1941. Within weeks, Greece had fallen under Axis control, divided between Germany, Italy, and Bulgaria.
The occupation marked the beginning of a dark chapter in Greek history. The country was strategically important, but the Axis powers showed little interest in the welfare of the population. The division of the territory resulted in inconsistent governance and exploitation. The Germans controlled key cities and transportation networks, while the Italians managed the majority of the countryside. Bulgaria, seeking territorial expansion, aggressively imposed policies of assimilation in northern regions. Each occupying force pursued its own interests, often at the expense of the Greek people.
From the earliest days of occupation, the signs of impending crisis were clear. The agricultural economy, already fragile, was disrupted by war and commandeered by the Axis to support their military campaigns. Transportation networks were dismantled or redirected to serve occupying forces, cutting off essential supply chains. Coastal blockades, imposed by the British to weaken the Axis, unintentionally contributed to the strangulation of Greek imports, especially food. The result was a country teetering on the edge of economic and social collapse.

Beginning with a jaw-dropping rumination on a centuries-old painting featuring a white man with a Black man's leg surgically attached (with the expired Black leg-donor in the foreground), contracts law scholar and celebrated journalist Patricia J. Williams uses the lens of the law to take on core questions of identity, ethics, and race.

With her trademark elegant prose and critical legal studies wisdom, Williams brings to bear a keen analytic eye and a lawyer's training to chapters exploring the ways we have legislated the ownership of everything from body parts to gene sequences—and the particular ways in which our laws in these areas isolate nonnormative looks, minority cultures, and out-of-the-box thinkers.

At the heart of "Wrongful Birth" is a lawsuit in which a white couple who use a sperm bank sue when their child "comes out Black." And "Hot Cheeto Girl" examines the way that algorithms give rise to new predictive categories of human assortment, layered with market-inflected cages of assigned destiny.

The Miracle of the Black Leg offers a brilliant meditation on the tricky place where law, science, ethics, and cultural slippage collide.
