Sinopsis

Great Earthquakes explores the science, history, and human impact of major seismic events, revealing how these geological forces have reshaped our world. It investigates plate tectonics, fault lines, and seismic wave behavior, while also examining historical earthquakes and their devastating consequences. For example, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake not only caused widespread destruction but also spurred significant advancements in building codes and urban planning. Understanding earthquake mechanics is crucial for developing effective disaster preparedness and mitigation strategies, essential for communities in seismically active regions.

The book traces the evolution of seismology, from early philosophical inquiries to modern monitoring techniques, demonstrating how our understanding of earthquakes has evolved with each major event. Case studies, such as the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, highlight the immediate impacts on populations and infrastructure, along with the long-term social, economic, and environmental consequences. It examines how societal factors, like building codes and emergency response capabilities, influence earthquake impact.

Structured to guide the reader from fundamental concepts to complex analyses, Great Earthquakes begins by introducing the physics of earthquakes and the tools used to measure them. It progresses through specific historical events and concludes with a discussion of forecasting, risk assessment, and mitigation strategies, bridging Earth Sciences with Geography, World History, and History World. This approach offers a comprehensive understanding of seismic events and their impact on human societies.

“If the people of this nation understood our banking and monetary system, I believe there would be a revolution before morning.” Henry Ford
Our contemporary liberal democracies have gradually given way to ademocratic, chaotic and illegal governance. By exploiting the flaws in our system to their advantage, the ruling class secures supreme power for itself, while the citizens sacrifice more and more.
How extensive is the illegal power of the elites? And what can be done to change things?
In this book, Thierry Brugvin provides valuable material for any citizen concerned with preserving the rule of law. He conducts a damning investigation into our contemporary democracies in order to expose their inner workings, while proposing avenues for modernization towards a better distribution of wealth.

As Apollo 11’s name suggests, there were actually a number of Apollo missions that came before, many of which included testing the rockets and different orbital and lunar modules in orbit. In fact, it wasn’t until Apollo 8 that a manned vehicle was sent towards the Moon and back, and before that mission, the most famous Apollo mission was Apollo 1, albeit for all the wrong reasons.
There were no delusions regarding the dangers of manned space travel, but they were brought home on January 27, 1967, when all three astronauts were killed by a fire that ignited in the cabin during a launch rehearsal. To this day, there is still debate over what ignited the fire, but the disaster made clear that the modules being used by NASA had a series of fatal flaws.
In the decades after the Apollo program, American space shuttles flew over 130 missions and successfully completed over 98% of them, but unfortunately, the two most famous missions were the ones that ended tragically aboard the Challenger and Columbia. The Space Shuttle Challenger was the most heavily used space shuttle in the three years it was operational, carrying the first minority astronaut and woman astronaut into space. Challenger was also the first space shuttle to complete a landing at night.
The notorious date of the Challenger disaster was commemorated by the crew of the Columbia while they were in space in 2003, and a few days later, on February 1, the Columbia was due to land at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 09:16. Only a few members of the press were present to watch the landing - this was, after all, supposed to be a routine return from a routine mission, the 113th for the shuttle program and the 28th for Columbia, one of the oldest Space Shuttles.

The human brain is the command center of the body, responsible for processing information, regulating bodily functions, and enabling cognitive abilities such as thinking, memory, and emotions. As the most complex organ in the human body, the brain contains billions of neurons that communicate through intricate networks, allowing for seamless coordination of voluntary and involuntary actions. Understanding the structure and function of the brain is essential for gaining insights into neurological health, mental well-being, and the mechanisms underlying various cognitive and motor processes.
The brain is divided into three primary regions: the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem. The cerebrum, the largest part of the brain, is responsible for higher cognitive functions such as reasoning, problem-solving, language, and sensory perception. It is further divided into four lobes—frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital—each with distinct roles in processing information. The cerebellum, located at the back of the brain, is crucial for coordinating movement, maintaining balance, and fine motor control. The brainstem, connecting the brain to the spinal cord, regulates vital autonomic functions such as breathing, heart rate, and digestion, ensuring the body’s survival.
Neurons, the fundamental units of the brain, communicate through electrical and chemical signals. This intricate communication network enables the processing of sensory inputs, the initiation of motor responses, and the storage of memories. Supporting cells known as glial cells play a crucial role in maintaining brain health by providing nutrients, removing waste, and protecting neurons from damage. Neurotransmitters, chemical messengers in the brain, facilitate signal transmission between neurons and influence mood, behavior, and cognitive functions.

A memoir about zookeeping, and what animals taught me about feminism.

In the early 1980s, when Erna Walraven decided to follow her dreams and become one of the first female zookeepers in Australia, she thought her biggest challenges would be feeding big cats and subduing irate gorillas. In fact, it was her male colleagues who made work miserable, harassing and humiliating her for doing a 'man's job'. So, she looked to the animals under her care to prove them wrong.

Despite what Erna's colleagues seemed to think, the females of the animal world were far from weak and demure. Elephant matriarchs led their herds; female bonobos revelled in sexual exploration; emu mothers abandoned their chicks to the care of their fathers. Her colleagues wouldn't dare tell a female tiger that hunting was a 'male's job' - why were they so intent on limiting Erna?

In this insightful and delightful book, Erna blends memoir and pop science to tell a fiercely female story. She recounts a life spent caring for animals in a fast transforming industry, and dives into scientific evidence and evolutionary history to debunk the myths that once held her back.

“With penetrating insight, Lehrman unfolds the contrasts and similarities between these two leaders . . . I savored every page of this magnificent work.”—Doris Kearns Goodwin, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln  Winner of the Abraham Lincoln Institute of Washington’s 2019 book prize Lewis E. Lehrman, a renowned historian and National Humanities Medal winner, gives new perspective on two of the greatest English-speaking statesmen—and their remarkable leadership in wars of national survival. Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill, as commanders in chief, led their nations to victory—Lincoln in the Civil War, Churchill in World War II. They became revered leaders—statesmen for all time. Yet these two world-famous war leaders have never been seriously compared at book length. Acclaimed historian Lewis Lehrman, in his pathbreaking comparison of both statesmen, finds that Lincoln and Churchill—with very different upbringings and contrasting personalities—led their war efforts, to some extent, in similar ways. As supreme war lords, they were guided not only by principles of honor, duty, and freedom, but also by the practical wisdom to know when, where, and how to apply these principles. Even their writings and speeches were swords in battle. Gifted literary stylists, both men relied on the written and spoken word to steel their citizens throughout desperate and prolonged wars. And both statesmen unexpectedly left office near the end of their wars—Lincoln by the bullet, Churchill by the ballot. They made mistakes, which Lehrman considers carefully. But the author emphasizes that, despite setbacks, they never gave up. “Deeply researched and elegantly written. . . . a valuable contribution to our knowledge of the past. By expertly conjoining two great leaders in a single volume, he has enhanced our understanding of both.” ―The Wall Street Journal  Includes illustrations and photographs
