Sinopsis

Brazilian Social Ways explores the intricate web of Brazilian society, revealing how deeply ingrained cultural practices shape daily life. This anthropological examination highlights the unwritten social norms governing behavior and identity. These norms maintain social order and influence everything from family structures to public rituals. For instance, kinship networks provide a crucial sense of belonging and support.

The book journeys through key social domains, beginning with the historical context of Brazilian social anthropology. It then examines the significance of family and kinship, the role of religion and spirituality (highlighting the syncretic traditions), and public life, including social interactions in urban spaces.

The book adopts an innovative approach by focusing on everyday practices, utilizing ethnographic storytelling to bring research to life. This makes the book valuable for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Brazilian culture and social interaction within Brazil.

Time is up. The climate crisis is no longer a future to be feared, but a devastating reality. We see it in the wildfires in California and floods across Britain—the "once in a generation" extreme weather events that now happen every year.

In a world where those in charge are constantly letting us down, real change in our lifetime means taking power into our own hands. The task ahead of us is daunting, but the emergence of a new wave of movements focused on climate justice, equality, and solidarity also brings hope.

Asking how we have arrived at this moment, Chris Saltmarsh argues that the profoundly political nature of the environmental crisis has been relentlessly downplayed. After all, how can solar panels save us while capitalism places profit over the future of the planet? Analyzing the failures of NGOs, the limitations of Extinction Rebellion and Youth Strikes, the role of trade unions, and the possibilities of a Green New Deal, Burnt issues a powerful call for a radical collective movement: saving the world is not enough; we must build a better one in the process.

"Is there any meaning in my life that the inevitable death awaiting me does not destroy?"

This poignant and candid autobiographical work uncovers the inner turmoil of a man struggling with a mid-life existential crisis. At the height of his literary fame and faced with the inevitability of death and the stark realities of existence, Leo Tolstoy found himself searching for answers to the ultimate philosophical questions about the meaning of life. Haunted by questions of mortality, purpose, and faith, A Confession, chronicles his spiritual journey through faith and towards self-discovery.
Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) was a Russian novelist, philosopher, and social reformer, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of all time. He is best known for his epic novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, both celebrated for their intricate character development and profound exploration of moral dilemmas and human nature. In his later years, Tolstoy experienced a spiritual awakening which led him to reject materialism and embrace a life of simplicity, seeking to align his life with his beliefs about non-violence and compassion. Tolstoy's legacy endures not only through his literary masterpieces but also through his profound impact on literature and philosophy.

    Mediterranean Theater in World...

Given its location, the Mediterranean Sea was of paramount importance for both transportation and commercial reasons, so controlling the sea and the land around it was vital for both sides. This makes it all the more ironic that, aside from the North African campaign, the fighting in places like Greece and Italy have been overlooked, while the most decisive naval battle in the Mediterranean, the Battle of Cape Matapan has largely been forgotten today, even as military historians have recognized its significance and some have even compared it with the legendary Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Control of the Mediterranean would prove crucial when the Western Allies would use it to amphibiously invade Sicily in 1943, marking their return to the European mainland and helping turn the tide against the Nazis on the continent.
Near the start of the war, Mussolini's farcical army – ill-trained, ill-equipped, and led with a startling purity of incompetence – attacked Greece out of Albania and, despite its huge numbers, suffered a swift and stinging defeat at the hands of the Greek army. Accordingly, the Wehrmacht invaded, taking the Balkans and Greece in just three weeks. British, Commonwealth, and Greek troops evacuated to Crete, and that set the stage for a Nazi invasion of the island, one involving the first mass deployment of paratroopers in history.
Although British maneuvering in North Africa began successfully against the Italians and they maintained control of the Suez Canal, the British forces suffered a series of defeats over the next two years, due to several problems the British army faced as a result of inadequate preparation and weaponry. For example, when the war began, junior officers were unprepared for the kind of cooperation between units that was necessary in the battles of North Africa. At the same time, while British tanks were capable of opposing Italian tanks, they were vastly inferior to German models.

Sparky Reardon — who dedicated 36 years to his alma mater, the University of Mississippi — was a witness to the best, and worst, of times at Ole Miss. Reardon engaged with every facet of campus life, navigating the wild and unpredictable situations sparked by students (and, at times, by visitors). Reardon found himself in the midst of campus crises where he facilitated the university family through tragedy and loss (some involved student casualties); he navigated intricate battles for freedom of expression on campus (including confrontations with the Ku Klux Klan and loony street preachers); he gently guided students (and sometimes administrators and politicians) through complex judicial issues; and he had a rare, insider’s view of the evolution of Oxford, Mississippi, from a quiet college town to a vibrant cultural hub. In The Dean, Sparky lays bare the joys and hardships of what he describes as “the best job in America.” In 1968, Reardon enrolled at Ole Miss with an eye on law school. Two years later, his plans shifted. Summoned to the dean’s office to account for his role as social chairman in breaking university rules, Reardon experienced a pivotal moment of clarity. As Reardon remembered, “It might have been the result of one of our parties running too late or getting too loud, or perhaps there was a chance that beer was involved.” He realized that someone, someday, would need to take this man’s place. Reardon left that meeting determined to become the dean of students at Ole Miss. Raised in Clarksdale, Mississippi, a young Sparky Reardon turned to books after a severe knee injury ended his sports days. Guided by inspiring teachers, he cultivated a passion for writing. Artist and author William Dunlap said, “Sparky Reardon’s The Dean is anecdotally rich and beautifully written. His prose — which soars — is once again proof that language is a Southerner’s birth
