Sinopse

Pitcairn Crime explores the fascinating and complex legal history of Pitcairn Island, a remote British territory populated by descendants of the HMS Bounty mutineers. This true crime narrative delves into the challenges of applying modern legal standards to an isolated culture with its own unique history and social norms. The book investigates the high-profile sexual assault trials that brought Pitcairn into the international spotlight, raising questions about justice, cultural relativism, and the long arm of international law in isolated communities.

The book examines Pitcairn's evolution from a mutineers' haven to a self-governing territory, highlighting how this history influenced legal proceedings and public perception. The narrative analyzes the evidence and legal arguments presented during the trials, revealing the difficulties of enforcing laws across vast geographical distances and cultural divides.

It underscores how the trials exposed fundamental tensions between cultural autonomy and universal human rights, impacting Pitcairn's social fabric and its relationship with the outside world. Beginning with Pitcairn's history and culture, the book progresses through the development of its legal system, focusing on the investigation and trials related to sexual offenses. It culminates in a discussion of the trials' long-term impact, offering a unique perspective by combining legal analysis with historical context and cultural sensitivity, making it valuable for those interested in true crime, legal history, and the dynamics of isolated communities.

The 1987 murder of Lita McClinton Sullivan sent shock waves through the affluent Atlanta suburb of Buckhead, Georgia like few other crimes before it. The neighborhood, with its stately mansions and top-tier schools, was simply not the kind of place where women were gunned down in broad daylight. How many socialites had enemies so dangerous they would be murdered by a hit man pretending to deliver roses on an early winter morning?

Lita was an intelligent, accomplished, and stunning Black woman from a respected Atlanta family. Her interracial marriage to white millionaire Jim Sullivan was a newsworthy occurrence in 1970s Georgia. Unfortunately, it wasn't long before Jim's roving eye and controlling nature put Lita on edge, leading to a divorce years later. As the legal battle raged and Jim's financial outlook grew precarious, he had a chance encounter with an ex-con who said he could "take care" of Jim's wife problem . . .

Award-winning writer Deb Miller Landau details the shocking events that followed Lita's murder in 1987, including the surprising lack of evidence, racial bias in the justice system, and the international manhunt for Lita's killer. Full of twists and turns, legal battles, and the McClinton family's unrelenting dedication to justice, Landau's investigation is the first complete account of this tragic American crime.

As Britain emerges into the mid–twentieth century, change is afoot. Cities are beginning to shift from smog-filled industrial hubs to more efficient metropolitan centers of commerce and, despite the country once again being blighted by war, society is beginning to shift towards a more modern, forward–thinking era. But change is not only limited to regular men and women; under the shifting tides of development, the criminal underbelly, too, is evolving, anxious for new avenues of exploitation and expansion . . .
And so, in the third instalment of his best-selling series, historian Carl Chinn examines this new era in the landscape of Britain's gangs. After the violent reign of the Peaky Blinders, the intimidation of the Birmingham gang and frequent gang wars up and down the country, from the wreckage new groups are emerging with new ways of making money and causing trouble, and, like those who came before them, they leave havoc and destruction in their wake.
Peaky Blinders: The Aftermath will bring this new generation of criminals into focus. And up and down the length of the country, from the dog tracks to the pubs of the East End, it delves into the murky world of the country's most villainous criminals.

Unlock the cultural obsession with high-stakes robberies in Heist, a collection of the world's greatest real-life break-ins. From the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum's famous art heist to the disappearance of the Marie Antoinette watch, these 100% true stories will have you on the edge of your seat--and double checking the locks on your doors!
Have you ever watched a movie like Ocean's Eleven and thought: There's no way that could ever actually happen, right? Wrong. In the US alone, there have been dozens, if not hundreds, of heists, from bank break-ins to museum plunders. In this premium compendium, we'll walk through the most impressive ones, diving into the details behind each case, the detectives that led the investigations, how the events unfolded, and what mysteries remain. The hardcover book will explore the top 50 incidents, including:
    1. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Heist: In March of 1990, two men dressed up as police officers and sweet-talked their way past security at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, MA. After tying up the real guards, these men dismantled and packed up 13 works of art, loaded them onto a truck, and drove off into the night, making the 81- minute breach one of the most expensive in modern history. Today, it remains the single largest property theft in the world.
    2. The Great Train Robbery: Not all heists happen in buildings. In fact, one of the most popular ones was the 1963 train robbery in which nearly 2.6 million pounds was lifted from a Royal Mail train headed to London. Using intel provided by a man on the inside dubbed The Ulsterman, the group rigged the railways traffic light system to bring the train to an extended stop, during which time, they funneled the money from one of the carriages into a waiting truck by way of a human chain.
    3. The French Bank Vault Tunnelers: On the morning of July 19, 1976, workers from a safe manufacturing company were called to the Société Générale bank to fix a faulty vault door that appeared to be jammed. When they drilled into the vault and peered in to diagnose the problem, though, what they found was not a loose screw or broken hinge, but a door that has been welded shut...from the inside. Also scattering the room was a couple of wine glasses, a portable stove, and a giant tunnel system that proved to be the method of transport for thieves, who had dug their way into the bank, spent the weekend there, and left with ten million in cash.
    4. D. B. Cooper's Escapades: The subject of many conspiracy theories, D. B. Cooper (not his real name) hopped on a Boeing 727 in a trench coat and sunglasses in 1971. When the plane had reached cruising altitude, Cooper hijacked it, extorting 200,000 dollars before strapping on a parachute, jumping out of the plane, and disappearing into thin air. This aerial heist remains unsolved to this day and remains one of the FBI's most frustrating open cases.
    5. The Botched Crown Jewels of England Theft: Back in 1671, a man named Thomas Blood (a cool name, by any standard) decided: Eh, I'm gonna steal the Crown Jewels. He reached out to Talbot Edwards, the keeper of the stones, with a proposition: if you give me a private viewing of the gemstones, I'll have my nephew marry your daughter (a nephew who, naturally, turned out to not exist). At this private viewing, Blood knocked out Talbot, smashed the jewels into pieces and threw the shards into his pockets, hoping to make a run for it. Though he didn't manage to escape, he did manage to escape jail time: The King at the time was so amused by this failed attempt that he let Blood off scot-free.
And that's just the start of it. Crack the code of the world's most elusive capers, from the popular tales your great grandad told you about to the ones that have been long forgotten.

    TOUGH GUYS IN THE ROOM
‘WEAK IS NOT WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO REMEMBER ABOUT ME.’
    Al Capone.
Back then, hot headed gangsters, not so gentle dames and bullet riddled corpses filled the newspaper headlines. And some of the stories below the headlines were even true. The 1920s was a period in American history when even the respectable were unwilling to stay sober. And not so fast cars carried assassins across Chicago, a city that for many captures the essence of the USA.
In TOUGH GUYS IN THE ROOM, the story of Al Capone and his rivals is told in separate and stand-alone topics that cover key figures and events. The crimes and conflict are remembered, and the context that shaped those events and protagonists is explained. The police and the law abiding that made a doomed attempt to impose Prohibition also make an appearance. TOUGH GUYS IN THE ROOM offers a detached and impartial perspective on what happened between the Chicago gangs of the 1920s. There are also some surprises.
TOUGH GUYS IN THE ROOM is a must for fans of gangsterdom. This account of what happened in Chicago is kept simple but that does not prevent author Howard Jackson from taking an independent line on the St Valentine’s Day massacre and the character of Al Capone.
