  The Ancestral Puebloans, once known as the Anasazi, were among the earliest inhabitants of the American Southwest, establishing complex societies that thrived in the arid landscapes of present-day Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. Their origins trace back thousands of years to nomadic hunter-gatherers who gradually transitioned into settled agricultural communities. Archaeological evidence suggests that the ancestors of the Pueblo people descended from early groups who migrated into the region over 10,000 years ago, following game and adapting to the changing environment. 
  As these early populations settled, they developed strategies to cope with the harsh desert conditions. By around 2000 BCE, they had begun cultivating maize, a crop introduced from Mesoamerica, which allowed for more stable food sources and led to the formation of permanent villages. The adoption of agriculture marked a significant shift in their way of life, as they built storage pits for surplus grain and started domesticating turkeys for additional sustenance. Over time, these settlements expanded, and small familial clusters evolved into larger communities. 
  The Basketmaker period, beginning around 1200 BCE, represents a crucial stage in Ancestral Puebloan development. During this era, people lived in semi-subterranean pit houses, circular structures dug into the earth and covered with wooden frames and mud plaster. These early homes provided insulation against the region’s extreme temperatures. The Basketmakers were also known for their exceptional weaving and basketry skills, crafting intricate containers and sandals from yucca fibers and other natural materials. Pottery, which became a defining feature of Puebloan culture, gradually emerged during the later stages of this period, allowing for improved food storage and cooking techniques.

  The story of China's imperial unification represents one of history's most consequential political transformations. "Imperial Chinese Foundations: Uniting the Land" explores the three dynasties that forged China's imperial system—a political structure that would endure for over two millennia. 
  The brief but revolutionary Qin Dynasty (221-206 BCE) ended centuries of warring states by conquering all rivals under the leadership of the First Emperor, Qin Shi Huang. Through military might, standardized writing, currency, measurements, and a unified legal code, the Qin created China's first centralized bureaucratic empire—though their harsh Legalist policies triggered rebellion after the emperor's death. 
  The Western Han Dynasty (206 BCE-9 CE) consolidated imperial rule through a more pragmatic blend of Confucian ideology and centralized governance. Under Emperor Wu's dynamic leadership, the Han expanded Chinese territory, opened the Silk Road, established the civil service examination system, and created cultural and political institutions that would define Chinese civilization for millennia. 
  As power shifted to the Eastern Han (25-220 CE), the dynasty initially flourished before facing mounting challenges from natural disasters, court intrigues, and the Yellow Turban Rebellion. Yet even as political cohesion weakened, this period saw remarkable innovations—including paper, the seismograph, and advances in mathematics and medicine—while Buddhism began its profound influence on Chinese civilization. 
  Through examining these three foundational dynasties, we witness the birth and evolution of the imperial Chinese state that would serve as a template for governance across East Asia and continue to influence Chinese identity into the modern era.

  Jules Mordecai Pincas (1885–1930) was a Bulgarian artist who settled down in Paris in 1905, after a detour via Munich. There he started painting signing Pascin, and soon became part of the École de Montparnasse and its cosmopolitan blend of outstanding names. 
  His canvases are as turbulent as his lifestyle, and he still stands out as a bad boy. Pascin hang himself on June 2nd, 1930, despite the first fruits of success his work had collected. This book aims at taking a more comprehensive approach on his work and style than critics usually do.
