In The Birdhouse Chronicles, internationally bestselling author Cathleen Miller offers a funny and wise account of how she and her husband abandon their San Francisco advertising careers to make a radical new life for themselves in a one-hundred-year-old Pennsylvania farmhouse located in the middle of an Amish cornpatch. Part memoir, part nature writing, and part old-house-restoration journal, this wonderfully humorous narrative brings home all the humor, exhilaration, and disappointment of pursuing a “simpler” life in the country. In her sassy, self-deprecating style, Cathleen Miller puts a fresh, authentic spin on the classic country memoir and surprises us with many unique twists. Sometimes wry, and sometimes full of awe, her observations about her neighbors and other locals infuse this true story with rich texture. Through it all we witness the blow-by-blow process as she and her husband refurbish their woefully dilapidated country house.

Over 450 years after his reign, Henry VIII is still the most famous and recognizable King of England, but it’s for all the wrong reasons. Though well regarded by contemporaries as a learned King and "one of the most charismatic rulers to sit on the English throne", he is best remembered today for his gluttony and multiple marriages, particularly the gruesome way in which he was widowed on more than one occasion. Naturally, that was the focus of the popular ShowTime drama series centered around his life, The Tudors.
While Henry’s reign is not considered as favorably as his daughter’s, Queen Elizabeth I would ultimately sentence a queen to death herself. Mary, Queen of Scots’ fame as a monarch lies less in her personality or achievements than in her position within the dynastic maneuvers and political-religious upheavals taking place in northwest Europe in the 16th century. Most monarchs spend their early years learning in preparation to rule and then spend the latter part of their lives wielding power and status, but Mary was thrust upon the throne when she was only a week old, and she ceased to be queen nearly 20 years before her death.
With French society in open revolt by the late 1780s, the King appeared indecisive at a number of crucial moments, including during a famous attempted escape that was thwarted at Vergennes, and he had to literally run for his life when a mob stormed the royal palace at Tuileries. Soon after, he was stripped of his dignity and his royal name, convicted of high treason in a sham trial as Citizen Louis Capet. Ironically, in death, some historians have asserted that his execution and the sympathy it engendered helped bring about the Restoration a generation later.
Nearly 220 years after she was put to the guillotine, Marie Antoinette is more famous than ever, fairly or unfairly coming to epitomize royalty and everything that was wrong with it.

The sea has always been a part of Nuala Moore's life: her earliest memory is of jumping off her father's fishing boat in Dingle harbour and swimming back to shore.
But after years of diving and marathon swimming, including a relay swim around the coast of Ireland and a solo swim across Lake Zurich, Nuala struggled to balance sacrifice and achievement. Her life and personal responsibilities, coupled with caring for her father, forced a change in her pathway.
Nuala began to push herself even further. Forcing herself into some of the coldest, most dangerous and remote waters in the world offered her freedom and the chance to take back control. Limitless is Nuala's breathtaking and awe-inspiring memoir – about how pushing herself to her mental and physical limits allowed her to find her true north, face her reflection and achieve the greatness she always knew was within.

“On a par with Alice in Wonderland, a real treasure of our literature… Full of wisdom, the wisdom of life.” – Henry Miller, author of Tropic of Cancer
When Fritz first arrived at Gurdjieff’s Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man, the mystic asked the boy what he wanted to learn. Fritz replied, "I want to know everything. Everything about man. I think it is called psychology or maybe philosophy." Gurdjieff answered with a sigh, "Your answer makes life difficult for me. I am the only one who teaches what you ask. You make more work for me."
Thus, Fritz became perhaps the most intimate student of this controversial teacher, but Gurdjieff was more than just a guru to Fritz. He was a father figure whose influence Peters never shook, and always struggled to integrate. This stunning memoir covering Peters' first years at the Institute retains a child's naive perspective while offering photorealistic recall of Gurdjieff, the workings of his intentional community, and the eccentric characters who lived there.
Read by actor Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild, Lords of Dogtown, Walden), this audiobook is a lively way to enjoy the classic memoir.
Piano solo of “Women’s Waltz,” composed by G. I. Gurdjieff and Thomas De Hartmann, played by Martín Dalesson.
