A majestic tale of discovery thatchanged many long-held views about the world
In 1519 Magellan and his fleet of five ships set sail from Seville, Spain, to discover a water route to the fabled Spice Islands in Indonesia, where the most sought-after commodities -- cloves, pepper, and nutmeg -- flourished. Three years later, a handful of survivors returned with an abundance of spices from their intended destination, but with just one ship carrying eighteen emaciated men. During their remarkable voyage around the world the crew endured starvation, disease, mutiny, and torture. Many men died, including Magellan, who was violently killed in a fierce battle.
This is the first full account in nearly half a century of this voyage into history: a tour of the world emerging from the Middle Ages into the Renaissance; a startling anthropological account of tribes, languages, and customs unknown to Europeans; and a chronicle of a desperate grab for commercial and political power.

    Toltec Empire - The Architects...

The Toltec civilization emerged in central Mexico following the decline of Teotihuacan, one of the most powerful and influential cities of ancient Mesoamerica. With Teotihuacan’s fall around the 7th or 8th century, the region experienced a power vacuum, creating an opportunity for new societies to rise. Among them were the Toltecs, a people who would shape the political, military, and cultural landscape of Mesoamerica for centuries to come.
The origins of the Toltecs remain a subject of scholarly debate, but many sources trace their roots to northern Mexico, possibly the arid regions of modern-day Zacatecas or the deserts beyond. By the 10th century, they had established themselves in the Valley of Mexico, where they founded their capital, Tula. The early rulers of the Toltecs, including the semi-legendary Mixcoatl, are credited with uniting various groups under a centralized government and fostering a warrior-based society that would come to dominate the region. Mixcoatl's son, Ce Acatl Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl, is one of the most famous figures in Toltec history. Said to be both a king and a priest, he promoted the worship of Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent deity, and encouraged a cultural shift away from excessive militarism and human sacrifice. However, his reign was met with opposition from factions who favored more warlike practices, leading to his eventual exile. His departure, shrouded in myth, would later influence Aztec beliefs and the idea of a prophesied return.
Tula, the heart of the Toltec Empire, reflected the ambitions and architectural ingenuity of its people. Expanding over several square miles, the city featured impressive pyramids, colonnaded halls, and massive stone warriors that stood as sentinels over its ceremonial centers. The city's strategic location allowed the Toltecs to control trade networks that extended as far as the Yucatán Peninsula and beyond.

During the last two decades, there has been much scholarly and popular interest in the financialization of the American economy—why the turn to finance has taken place, what constituted it, and what has come out of it. In Disembedded, Basak Kus draws from the theories of Karl Polanyi—one of the greatest and most influential political economists of the twentieth century—to answer these questions. Focused primarily on the state's regulatory role in a dominantly financialized economy, Kus examines how neoliberal principles influenced the evolution of American regulatory policies, shaping the financial sector's operations and practices. Her narrative traces the trajectory of these interactions, highlighting critical junctures, policy decisions, and market outcomes that culminated in the financial crisis. Offering historical insights into the financial crisis spanning 2007-2010 and its ensuing influence on American politics and democracy, Disembedded provides a broad-ranging and systemic explanation of the American political economy, especially the regulatory landscape that shaped the patterns of financialization.

While the pandemic has monopolised attention over the past two years, it's far from the only story, as tectonic changes continue on the world stage and the "great transition" picks up pace.
As well as the traditional dynamics of international power, torn between US-China bipolarism and the ambitions of old and new regional actors, this Report explores the other major transitions taking place. Firstly, the economic transition of a world deeper and deeper in debt and now seeing the return of state intervention. Secondly, the transition of the democracies and international law, or more precisely, their dual "crisis" in the face of contrasting models. And thirdly, the environmental and digital transitions, which will be key features of the decades to come. Intertwining inextricably with each other, these transitions will shape the major trends in regional politics and, in turn, be shaped by them. That's why Italy and Europe are facing momentous challenges, which the ISPI Report 2022 strives to outline, to equip readers with a compass for a changing world.
