Mayor Adler of Austin had no place to hide.

    • A serial bomber terrorizes the fastest-growing U.S. city.
    • A pandemic kills people and shuts down the economy.
    • Homeless encampments take over parks and civic debate.
    • A city is at war with itself over policing and race.
    • Affordability and housing costs explode.
    • A city navigates unprecedented political polarization.

From 2015 to 2023, every crisis landed on the Austin mayor’s desk—and every decision carried immediate, real-world consequences. Hot Seat—Hot City is Adler’s unflinching, first-person account of what governing actually looks like when there are no great options. Not a campaign memoir or partisan argument—this is written by someone accountable for outcomes, not rhetoric.

As national politics grows more dysfunctional, cities have become the front line of American democracy. Mayors absorb the consequences of failures they didn’t create, forced to make real-time decisions under intense public scrutiny. This is the story of mayors everywhere, and 48 U.S. mayors have put their names behind it.

This book is a clear-eyed look at what democratic leadership demands when consensus is elusive, institutions are strained, and the stakes are high.

A DAUGHTER GROOMED, A FATHER POWERLESS TO STOP IT

"I was doing everything I could to try and keep my daughter at home because she had pretty much obliterated her bedroom. She was lashing out against everything and everyone because she had been utterly traumatised."

Marlon West works as a professional mental health practitioner who has tirelessly counselled survivors of UK grooming gangs through their trauma. So, when his 13-year-old daughter Scarlett was targeted and groomed, he immediately spotted the red flags.

Despite this, the grooming - initiated by an older white woman - became so relentless that he was helpless to try and stop it.

Over the two years that followed, the single father reported his daughter Scarlett missing from home an astonishing 56 times. He even took the heartbreaking decision to place her in care to try and keep her safe, but he says police failed to help him or stop the grooming, and in some instances, they actually left her in the care of her groomers rather than return her home.

Instead, he claims that he and his daughter were 'criminalised' and, at one meeting, he was told to shut up and stop reporting his (then) 14-year-old missing.

Scarlett, who was groomed in Rochdale, only escaped her abusers two years ago, and her father believes that girls are still being targeted to this day. Today, Marlon is one of the main campaigners demanding a government-led national inquiry into UK grooming gangs, which he insists are at epidemic proportions.

Juvenile crime doesn’t just happen—there is always a story behind it.
Before Their Crimes: What We’re Misunderstanding about Childhood Trauma, Youth Crime, and the Path to Healing is a ground-breaking audiobook that sheds new light on the relationship of childhood trauma and juvenile crime. Wendy Smith uses the framework of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) to explain how the toxic stress of early childhood trauma can make children vulnerable to committing criminal acts. Smith draws from interviews with twenty men and women from across the racial and social divide who spent years in prison after committing serious crimes as children. Smith not only reveals the pernicious mechanisms that link early trauma to later crime, but also illuminates the potential for healing among even the most egregious offenders.
