Robert W. Chambers (1865-1933) studied art in Paris in the late 80's and early 90's, where his work was displayed at the Salon. However, shortly after returning to America, he decided to spend his time in writing. He became popular as the writer of a number of romantic novels, but is now best known as the author of "The King In Yellow". This is a collection of the first half of this work of short stories which have an eerie, other-worldly feel to it; but the stories in the second half are essentially love stories, strongly coloured by the author's life as an artist in France.
Only the first half of the collection of stories is presented here: the earlier stories are all coloured by the background presence of a play, "The King In Yellow" itself, which corrupts those who read it, and opens them to horrible experiences and to visions of a ghastly other world, lit by dark stars and distorted skies. This half of the collection is completed by a few very short pieces and two rather strange and beautiful stories of love and time, loneliness and death. (summary by Peter Yearsley)

There is something about the number 3.

The Ancient Greeks believed 3 was the perfect number, and in China 3 has always been a lucky number, and they know a thing or two.

Most religions also have 3 this and 3 that and, of course, in these more modern times, three’s a crowd may be too many, except when it’s a ménage à trois. It seems good things usually come in threes.

Whatever history and culture says WE think 3, a hat-trick of stories, is a great number to explore themes and literary avenues that classic authors were so adept at creating.

Bazyli Breznik used to rule the world, but now the centuries old vampire is at the bottom of the food chain. He's broke and drives a yellow cab in NYC. He sleeps in the trunk. He's an alcoholic. His only friends are drunks. He's a murderer and believes he's the most evil creature on earth.

    He's wrong.

Baz is in hiding, like the rest of his kind. They aren't like normal humans, they were changed more than five hundred years ago by a virus into a version of human who never grows old, heals fast, and requires fresh blood for nutrition. The vampires of myth and legend aren't some kind of magical beings, they're real people whose disease is both blessing and curse. And Baz was once the badest of them all.

Baz is satisfied with living a marginal life on the edge of society as punishment for all the sins he committed centuries ago. A waitress at one of the diners in his area is nearly kidnapped in front of him. He steps in only to discover that the waitress is really an undercover cop who is part of a sting operation. Baz ends up agreeing to be an informant so the cops will leave him alone. But the traffickers try to take the lady cop, Nika, again, and Baz becomes annoyed. She's good people, and he's always hated slavery.

When Nika is finally taken on try number three, he's not content to look and listen anymore. He discovers that the criminals behind the ring aren't just bad people, they're the kind of bad he used to be. And they don't care who they hurt, or who finds out about them. He's got to stop them, get Nika back, and manage not to kill too many people all at the same time.

He wasn't cut out to be a good guy.

A frightening dystopian horror novel in which grief is forbidden and purged from the mind
Sorrow is inefficient. It’s also inescapable.
Lieutenant Dev Singh dutifully spends his days recording the memories of people who, struck with incurable depression, will soon have their minds erased in order to be more productive members of society.
At night though, hidden in the dark, Dev remembers and writes in his secret journal the special moments shared with him—the small laugh of a toddler, the stillness of a late afternoon, the first flutter of love. But when the Bureau finds out that he has been recounting the memories—and that the depression is in him too—he is sent to a sanitarium to heal. After all, the Bureau knows what’s best for you.
A nightmarish descent from sadness to madness, The Collector is a nightmarish mix of 1984 and Never Let Me Go.
