  Written in 1819, the short story is set in about 1790 and describes the events that unfold when Ichabod Crane comes to Sleepy Hollow to teach school in the small Dutch settlement. Ichabod is a firm believer of the tales of ghosts and witchcraft he has heard and read, including the local legend of the Headless Horseman who haunts the area. 
  As Ichabod begins to court Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter of a wealthy farmer, he incurs the rath of Brom Bones, a jealous rival for Katrina’s affections who often plays cruel tricks on the awkward schoolmaster. 
  Late one night as Ichabod rides home after a party at Katrina’s home, he comes face to face with the headless horseman and is never seen again.

  Arrowsmith is a novel by American author Sinclair Lewis, first published in 1925. It won the 1926 Pulitzer Prize (which Lewis declined). Lewis was greatly assisted in its preparation by science writer Paul de Kruif, who received 25% of the royalties on sales, although Lewis was listed as the sole author.
  Arrowsmith is an early major novel dealing with the culture of science. It was written in the period after the reforms of medical education flowing from the Flexner Report on Medical Education in the United States and Canada: A Report to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, 1910, which had called on medical schools in the United States to adhere to mainstream science in their teaching and research.
  The book was adapted by Hollywood as Arrowsmith in 1931, featuring Ronald Colman and Helen Hayes. It was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay.

  Notes from Underground also translated as Notes from the Underground or Letters from the Underworld) is a novella by Fyodor Dostoevsky, first published in the journal Epoch in 1864. It is a first-person narrative in the form of a "confession": the work was originally announced by Dostoevsky in Epoch under the title "A Confession".The novella presents itself as an excerpt from the memoirs of a bitter, isolated, unnamed narrator (generally referred to by critics as the Underground Man), who is a retired civil servant living in St. Petersburg. Although the first part of the novella has the form of a monologue, the narrator's form of address to his reader is acutely dialogized. According to Mikhail Bakhtin, in the Underground Man's confession "there is literally not a single monologically firm, undissociated word". The Underground Man's every word anticipates the words of an other, with whom he enters into an obsessive internal polemic.
