Sinopsis

Edward Snowden's release of classified NSA documents exposed the widespread government practice of mass surveillance in a democratic society. The publication of these documents, facilitated by three journalists, as well as efforts to criminalize the act of being a whistleblower or source, signaled a new era in the coverage of national security reporting. The contributors to Journalism After Snowden analyze the implications of the Snowden affair for journalism and the future role of the profession as a watchdog for the public good. Integrating discussions of media, law, surveillance, technology, and national security, the book offers a timely and much-needed assessment of the promises and perils for journalism in the digital age.Journalism After Snowden is essential reading for citizens, journalists, and academics in search of perspective on the need for and threats to investigative journalism in an age of heightened surveillance. The book features contributions from key players involved in the reporting of leaks of classified information by Edward Snowden, including Alan Rusbridger, former editor-in-chief of The Guardian; ex-New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson; legal scholar and journalist Glenn Greenwald; and Snowden himself. Other contributors include dean of Columbia Graduate School of Journalism Steve Coll, Internet and society scholar Clay Shirky, legal scholar Cass Sunstein, and journalist Julia Angwin. Topics discussed include protecting sources, digital security practices, the legal rights of journalists, access to classified data, interpreting journalistic privilege in the digital age, and understanding the impact of the Internet and telecommunications policy on journalism. The anthology's interdisciplinary nature provides a comprehensive overview and understanding of how society can protect the press and ensure the free flow of information.

A founding member of the Navy SEALs recounts the formation of that elite fighting force in this “honest, no-holds-barred” memoir of the Vietnam War (Richard Marcinko, author of Rogue Warrior).

Chief Petty Officer James "Patches" Watson was there at the start. As a high-performing frogman with the famed Underwater Demolition Team 21, he was chosen to become a founding member—or a “plank owner”—of the U.S. Navy SEALs.

Through three tours in the jungle hell of Vietnam, he led the way as point man—the one in charge of navigating trip wires, booby traps and punji pits. In this vividly detailed memoir, he recounts guiding his squad of amphibious fighters on missions of rescue, reconnaissance, and demolition. Together with his brave comrades, Watson confronted a war's unique terrors head-on, unprotected . . . and unafraid.

This is the story of a hero told from the heart and from the gut—an authentic tour of duty with one of the most legendary commandoes of the Vietnam War.

Her experiences serve as a reminder that while life is not always fair, ultimately, the choice to surrender or keep on living is ours. Her message to others who have experienced loss or tragedy is this: stop waiting for the other shoe to drop. Let life go on, and good things will be waiting for you on the other side of the pain.

Peter Brown, leader of South Africa's Liberal Party until its demise in 1968, is one of the unsung heroes of South Africa's struggle against apartheid in pursuit of non-racial democracy. In Opening Men's Eyes, author Michael Cardo tells the story of how a privileged youngster growing up in the all-white world of racially conservative Natal settler society had the scales of racial prejudice removed from his eyes and how he set about opening the eyes of his compatriots. Cardo brings to life Brown's friendships across the colour bar with the likes of Archie Gumede, later one of the founders of the United Democratic Front, and his close relationship with the celebrated novelist Alan Paton, author of Cry, The Beloved Country. The book provides the first documented history of the Liberal Party, and shows how it was radicalised under Brown's leadership. Opening Men's Eyes offers a fascinating sidelight on South Africa's political and intellectual history.

Two years ago I lost a family member: Her name was Georgia Ann Shifflett Brinley. Her dying wish was for me to publish this radio broadcast which she sent me on CD. It has been two years and now my heart can step up and take the story under arm for her legacy. The radio show starts out with her and the announcer.
The Shifflett Family is a very large and famous royal family from several countries but no matter how spelled are all the same family. Many are the stories passed down of this family and many have not heard this recorded version as of yet, it being tucked far away and no way of publishing in the family's grasp till now as cousin I am doing for all.
I hope all the family and many historians reach out to listen as all is just one detailed story of the famous family and their early life way back to before plantation times.
Yes Georgia Ann Shifflett Brinley it is done.
Your Loving Cousin who misses you so much.

Human flight is one of the last great challenges on Earth. Not like how the Wright brothers flew, but how we fly in our dreams. This is the goal of the Wingsuit Landing Project: to soar through the sky at speeds up to one hundred miles per hour and to land without the aid of a parachute. This project is the creation of thirty-seven-year-old Jeb Corliss, Jr., a Southern Californian who seeks to emulate a mode of flight more like a flying squirrel than bird or plane.Journalist Matt Higgins gained intimate access to Corliss, who, after years of BASE jumping and skydiving, set out to be the first person to be dropped 2,400 feet and land solely with the aid of a wingsuit. But somewhere in the UK, forty-two-year-old Gary Connery was plotting to beat Corliss at his own game. Along with an international group of wingsuit devotees, Corliss and Connery race to leap into the unknown as the world's foremost wingsuit pilots. This race will nearly cost one of the competitors his life.A riveting, adrenaline-fueled narrative about a group of unforgettable characters who risk everything to achieve man's age-old dream of flying, Bird Dream takes listeners to the cutting edge of this new frontier-as well as the strange science and fearless history that have led us to this remarkable point in the human experience.
