Summary

While on vacation in Italy, affluent young Lucy Honeychurch becomes attracted to passionate, vital George Emerson. Once they are back in England, however, Lucy becomes engaged to the dilettante Cecil Vyse, an emblem of bloodless English society. When the Emersons move to town, Lucy, still attracted to George, realizes that she does not love Cecil. Encouraged by George’s father, and despite opposition from her own family, she marries George, and they spend their honeymoon in Italy, which represents freedom and passion.  The Modern Library ranked A Room with a View 79th on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.

What if Jesus suddenly appeared and announced that he planned to run for President of the United States? Yes, that Jesus. And what if a well-meaning but utterly inexperienced band of disciples not only helped him mount a seat-of-the-pants campaign but also ran it well, getting millions of people to support him and in the process throwing the other two major party candidates—as well as the world’s news media—into a frenzy as they scramble to discredit him?Roland Merullo’s bitingly clever satirical novel about the state of American politics follows one man’s campaign to bring back goodness and kindness (real goodness and kindness this time) in a country that has fallen into a divisive state of fear and hatred. Merullo takes us into the heart of “a nation in grave spiritual danger” as the Son of man sets out to make everyone realize that “politics as usual” is no longer an acceptable alternative.American Savior is a remarkably innovative novel that challenges our perceptions and beliefs while it wags a finger at the folly of our self-righteousness. It is sure to cause controversy among those for whom politics itself has become a kind of religion.

On a hot summer day two carpenters, Gerasim and Lyubim, sit in a pond, floundering about in the water under a willow tree, beside the unfinished bathing shed they were supposed to be working on. Blue from cold and wrangling, they struggle to drag a large eel out by the gills, from under the root. Read in English, unabridged.

History is always written by the winners and about the winners. But what about the poor souls lurking in the shadows of history, the ones who were just as remarkable but perhaps didn't stick their chests out as they crossed the line? In Second Best, Australia's foremost historian and comedian Ben Pobjie celebrates the nobility and altogether more fascinating stories of the silver-medal getters. What drove them on their incredible feats, why did they just miss out, and how did they cope with the oblivion of finishing second? From the Second Fleet, the second man on the moon and Australia's second prime minister whose name we consistently forget, Second Best shines a light on those plucky men and women who, through no fault of their own – or at least only a little bit of fault of their own – didn't quite get there before everyone else, but did get there before almost everyone else.
