Sinopsis

Ethan Varn was a fire investigator who walked away from the job—and from the flames that once scorched more than just skin. Years later, when a new blaze ignites in the ruins of a building he thought was erased, he’s pulled back into the black heart of a case that never really ended.Bones are found unburned. Symbols rise beneath the soot. And a single, scorched Polaroid—of a child’s party and a fire that was never supposed to reach them—lands in his hands like a curse returning home.As Ethan unravels a spiral of coverups, vanished witnesses, and impossible heatless fires, he finds the pattern pointing not outward—but inward. The buildings may be silent now, but something buried in their foundations still remembers the screams. Still waits. To find the truth, Ethan must descend into the very ash he once helped scatter, face the memories he was ordered to forget, and uncover the ritual that burned more than just walls. Because this fire wasn’t a tragedy. It was an offering. What happens when the investigator becomes the ignition? And what if the only way out… is remembering what you were made to forget?

An eerie tale, combining investigation, horror and surprise, Robert van Gulik's latest Chinese detective story is set in a remote western border province of the mighty Tang empire.

There, in the district of Lan-fang, separated from the vast Tartar steppes of Central Asia by only a boundary river, Judge Dee faces and solves one of the most frightening cases of his long career.

Outside the east city gate, on a wooded hill, stood a centuries-old Buddhist temple. It was there that the phantom stalked; and there also a series of brutal murders were committed. Judge Dee's inquiry into them is complicated by a mysterious dying message from a young girl and by the theft of a large sum in gold from an imperial treasurer.

Judge Dee presided over his imperial Chinese court with a unique brand of Confucian justice. A near mythic figure in China, he distinguished himself as a tribunal magistrate, inquisitor, and public avenger. Long after his death, accounts of his exploits were celebrated in Chinese folklore, and later immortalized by Robert van Gulik in his electrifying mysteries.

"Judge Dee belongs in that select group of fictional detectives headed by the renowned Sherlock Holmes. I assure you it is a compliment not given frivolously."
    —Robert Kirsch, Los Angeles Times

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
The tale of a negligent and lazy village gravedigger who receives a harsh lesson and realizes that diligent fulfillment of duties pays off.
The idea for the story was sent to Lovecraft by C. W. Smith, the publisher of the magazine "The Tryout" (in which the text was first published – the last case when Lovecraft's story would appear first in an amateur newspaper). The publisher of "Weird Tales" rejected the story, even though it seemed tailor-made for the magazine's undemanding readership. The likely reason for this reluctance was the macabre nature of the text, which dealt with the deceased, and it was precisely because of such themes in one of Lovecraft's stories that "Weird Tales" had problems with the authorities."
