Sinopsis

"Lena, darling," she said, "you must control yourself. Madame Scranton will return in a moment, with the young lady who is to be your roommate and companion, during the next year. She is a lovely and charming girl; and I do not want my own[12] sweet darling's face to be utterly disfigured by weeping when her new friend first beholds it. I am certain, my dear daughter, that you will be very happy here, and perfectly content after the first loneliness wears away." "I can never be happy and contented away from you and Papa!" cried the young lady passionately. "I should feel like a wicked, cruel hearted creature, if I became contented and happy when separated from you. I know I shall die of home-sickness before I have been here one term," and her tears dripped anew.

By the age of 25 Lanoe Hawker of the Royal Flying Corps had won the VC and DSO. He was the first pilot to record five 'kills' before being shot down and killed by Baron von Richthofen (The Red Baron).Lanoe's biography was written by his brother Tyrrel as a tribute. The Hawkers came from a distinguished sporting family with strong military and naval records and Lanoe from the outset set his sights on flying for the RFC. After attending the Central Flying School, he crossed to France in October 1914 with 6 Squadron equipped with BE2s and Henri Farmans. As the war in the air progressed, Hawker shone as both a combat pilot and commander. He was rapidly promoted and given command of 24 Squadron. He, like other pilots, flew numerous early fighter aircraft such as the Bristol Scout, BE2c, FE2b and the famous DH2. Casualty/death rates were appalling but this special band of brothers flew on regardless until their turn came. This book contains many combat reports by pilots of their actions in the air which make the most graphic reading. Of particular interest is von Richthofen's account of their fatal encounter. The relative merits, qualities and characteristics of the aircraft, both British, French and German, are discussed with pilots' opinions. As an insight into Great War combat air operations Hawker VC RFC Ace is unlikely to be surpassed.

In Climbing My Himalaya, Wendy Chi shares her journey as a first-generation American immigrant through mountain peaks of dispossession, injury, and brokenness to the Promised Land of God's love, healing, and redemption.
Born in Taiwan to two blind parents who moved to the United States seeking freedom and opportunity for their children, Wendy knew only anger, bitterness, and fear at leaving her homeland. A new language, culture, education, and helping blind parents negotiate the American system all seemed obstacles too steep to climb. Resentment toward God and family left her isolated even as she climbed the ladder of academic and career success.
But the heavenly Father she'd pushed away refused to leave her alone. Wendy gradually recognized her physically blind parents had clearer spiritual sight than her own. When she let go of fear to freefall into God's arms, she discovered that even in her doubt and short-sightedness, God had been orchestrating His perfect plan behind the scenes. In His unconditional love, she found spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical healing.
This compelling memoir brings home the wonderful truth that when we feel like so many broken pieces, God uses even brokenness to create the stained-glass masterpiece that is His ultimate purpose for our lives.

This classic memoir is “an absorbing tale” of life in Appalachian Kentucky during the Great Depression (The Washington Post).

G.C. “Red” Jones’s classic memoir of growing up in rural eastern Kentucky during the Depression is a story of courage, persistence, and eventual triumph. His priceless and detailed recollections of hardscrabble farming, of the impact of Prohibition on an individualistic people, of the community-destroying mine wars of “Bloody Harlan,” and of the drastic dislocations brought by World War II are essential to understanding this seminal era in Appalachian history.

“An absorbing tale told in the vernacular language of the teamsters, farmers and miners in rural, mountainous Kentucky in the early decades of this century. The narrative flows with the symmetry that comes naturally to the accomplished storyteller.” —TheWashington Post

“Draws the reader into a sometimes frightening world of survival.” —Lexington Herald-Leader

“He bears witness to Harlan County—first as a community of self-sufficient farmers, then as a mining area and finally in the 1930s as ‘bloody Harlan’ . . . Mr. Jones celebrates horses and mules, the bounty of the hillside farms and woods and the rough ingenuity, honor and sweetness of the mountain people.” —The New York Times

“Jones shows all of us that fierce determination, lived day by day, can lead to a satisfying life, even though it might be hard.” —Kentucky Monthly

Cold StorageIn May 2003, an Arizona man who'd bought dozens of sealed boxes at an auction of unclaimed property made a horrifying discovery: the bodies of three plastic-wrapped infants, one of which had become mummified over the years. Police traced them to Dianne Odell, 50, a mother of eight children, who admitted the babies were hers but claimed that they'd died of natural causes.

Justice DeferredIn 1989, police had found the remains of a long-dead infant in a suitcase in the trunk of a car Odell had abandoned. The statute of limitations on manslaughter had saved her then from prosecution. She maintained that the fetus was the product of a rape by her father, and stillborn.

Baby-Killer's FateOdell said her own domineering mother had forced her into teen prostitution and murdered what she viewed as "bastard children." Both parents were dead and unable to contradict her. Would Odell's stories sway the jury and buy her the mercy her babies were never granted? Or would she be forced to face the consequences of bringing innocent lives into the world - only to end them in cold blood....
