Sinopse

In 'The Collected Stories of Elisabeth Sanxay Holding,' readers are invited into a diverse array of narrative worlds where psychological tension and incisive character studies reign supreme. Holding, masterfully weaving elements of mystery and suspense, captivates her audience with tightly constructed tales that often reveal the darker aspects of human nature. With a prose style marked by clarity and psychological depth, her storytelling reflects the influences of early 20th-century American literature, echoing the complexities found in the works of contemporaries such as Patricia Highsmith and Shirley Jackson. This collection stands as a testament to Holding's craftsmanship, showcasing her unique approach to suspense rooted in domestic settings that illuminate social anxieties of her time. Elisabeth Sanxay Holding emerged as a significant figure in American literature, particularly as a pioneering voice in the fields of mystery and crime fiction. Her background as a novelist and a short story writer, intertwined with her experiences during the socio-cultural transformations of the 1930s and 1940s, provided her with a keen insight into human psychology and societal dynamics. This contextual foundation informed her writing, allowing her to explore themes of morality, betrayal, and the emotional undercurrents of seemingly mundane lives. Readers who appreciate layered narratives rich in psychological nuance will find 'The Collected Stories of Elisabeth Sanxay Holding' not only an enchanting journey but also an essential exploration of the human condition. This volume serves as an entrancing introduction to Holding's oeuvre, appealing to both seasoned enthusiasts of classic literature and modern readers seeking to unravel the intricate tapestry of her storytelling.

Vsevolod Mikhailovich Garshin was born on 14th February 1855 in what is now Dnipro in the Ukraine, but then part of the Russian Empire.
After attending secondary school he studied at the Saint Petersburg Mining Institute.
Wars between and on behalf of Empires were a regular feature of the decades then. Garshin volunteered to serve in the Russian army at the beginning of the Russo-Turkish War in 1877.
He began as a private in the Balkans campaign and was wounded in action. By the end of the war, in 1878, he had been promoted to officer rank.
By now Garshin, having previously published some articles and reviews in newspapers, wished to devote himself to a literary career. The decision made he resigned his army commission.
His time as a soldier provided rich experiences for his early stories. His first ‘Four Days’ was related as the interior monologue of a wounded soldier left for dead on the battlefield for four days, face to face with the corpse of a Turkish soldier he had killed, gained him early admiration as an author of note.
He wrote perhaps only 20 stories, but their influence was immense, although in these more modern times he is barely remembered and lives in the more prolific shadows of others. His characters are superbly worked into stories that come alive in the intensity and reality of his prose.
Garshin’s most well-known story is ‘The Red Flower’, also known as ‘Scarlet Blossom’ and is easily amongst the first rank of stories dealing with mental health issues.
Despite early literary success, he himself experienced periodical bouts of mental illness.
In one such bout Garshin attempted to commit suicide by throwing himself down the stone stairs leading into his apartment building. Although not immediately fatal, Vsevolod Garshin died as a result of his injuries in a St Petersburg hospital on 5th April 1888. He was 33.

In this landmark collection, William T. Vollmann offers a kaleidoscopic retrospective of the visual artwork he has produced over four decades, with new commentary from Vollmann on his process, inspiration, and the many intersections with his writing.

The celebrated author of over twenty-five books (among them the National Book Award–winning novel Europe Central; the seven-volume Rising Up and Rising Down, based on Vollmann's career as a war correspondent; and the two-volume climate change investigation Carbon Ideologies), Vollmann's equally ambitious and prolific career as a photographer, printmaker, and painter reflects the artist's deep interest in people existing on the margins, a profound empathy for his subjects, and the humility and generosity to meet them on their terms.

In Shadows of Love, Shadows of Loneliness, a series of essays commissioned especially for this book lays out Vollmann's views on what photographs can and should say, how he chooses what to represent (beauty, suffering, compassion, love, desire, ideology), thoughts on photographic consensuality, and any number of technical descriptions. Particularly useful for Vollmann fans and scholars are the cross-references between these artistic and photographic projects and his books.
