Sinopse

In 'The Feasts of Autolycus: The Diary of a Greedy Woman', Elizabeth Robins Pennell intricately weaves personal narrative with culinary exploration, reflecting both a literary and societal tapestry of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Pennell employs a confessional diary style that invites readers into the intimate realms of her gastronomic temptations and philosophical musings on appetite, desire, and the culinary arts. The book serves as a social commentary on the changing roles of women, revealing how food intertwines with identity, domesticity, and pleasure in an increasingly modern world. Elizabeth Robins Pennell, an American author and illustrator who became prominent as a literary figure in England, was influenced by her experiences in the bustling cultural milieu of London, where food and society were inextricably linked. With her background in art and literature, Pennell's observational prowess and sincerely humorous prose invite readers to consider deeper questions of morality and indulgence, reflecting her artistic sensibilities and her ambivalence toward the era's societal expectations of women. For readers who appreciate literature that combines the joys of eating with thoughtful reflections on human nature, 'The Feasts of Autolycus' offers both entertainment and insight. Pennell's witty and engaging style resonates well with those who have a penchant for culinary history, memoirs, and social commentary, making this book a delightful treat for the mind as well as the palate.

In a first for the chefs' profession The Chefs’ Knowledge has gone audio. We broke new ground with our first-ever book for junior chefs and now we’ve gone one step further by releasing a new audio version that takes the project in a completely new direction.
The Chefs’ Knowledge contains interviews, advice, and expert knowledge as well as working professional recipes for the 100 dishes every chef should know. The new audio version is a collection of 100 scenes that brings the book to life all acted out by 3rd years students from the Arden School of Theatre at UCEN Manchester.
Catherine Farinha, publisher of The Chefs’ Knowledge explained: “We wanted to do an audio version of The Chefs’ Knowledge for a number of reasons. Chiefly because dyslexia is widespread in kitchens and a lot of chefs, especially juniors, can be at a real disadvantage because of it. However, we didn’t want to just record recipes being read out. So, we came up with something new. Our editor, Chandos Elletson, used to work in Film and Television and he wrote a few test scenes that made the recipes into little dramas. We got these acted out by real actors and they came alive. And that became the format for the new audio version.”
Elletson told The Chefs’ Forum: “What we’ve done is very unusual. We took the 100 Dishes that Every Chef Should Know idea and turned it on its head. What you have in the audio version are 100 imaginary scenes where junior chefs learn about dishes on the menu of a fictitious hotel. One of the examples I wrote was a scene where two honeymooners wanted to know the recipe for the granola they enjoyed at breakfast. So the head chef goes to their table and explains it. It brings the recipe alive in a way that is relatable and that’s the secret of what we’ve done. We’re hoping this really resonates with listeners who can learn by enjoying some dramatic scenes rather than listening to dry recipes.”

THE INSTANT #1 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
From award-winning writer Nigel Slater, comes a new and exquisitely written collection of notes, memoir, stories and small moments of joy.
'Nigel Slater’s prose is the rarest delicacy of all: exquisite yet effortless, filled with heart, tenderness, yearning and humour' ELIZABETH DAY
For years, Nigel Slater has kept notebooks of curiosities and wonderings, penned while at his kitchen table, soaked in a fisherman’s hut in Reykjavik, sitting calmly in a moss garden in Japan or sheltering from a blizzard in a Vienna Konditorei.
These are the small moments, events and happenings that gave pleasure before they disappeared. Miso soup for breakfast, packing a suitcase for a trip and watching a butterfly settle on a carpet, hiding in plain sight. He gives short stories of feasts such as a mango eaten in monsoon rain or a dish of restorative macaroni cheese and homes in on the scent of freshly picked sweet peas and the sound of water breathing at night in Japan.
This funny and sharply observed collection of the good bits of life, often things that pass many of us by, is utter joy from beginning to end.
‘I loved this. It is a secular book of hours – thoughts and pleasures beautifully cadenced and generously placed’ Edmund de Waal
‘Nigel Slater has a magical capacity to find beauty in the smallest moments. A nourishing, sustaining book’ Olivia Laing
‘His evocative, uplifting observations are a balm for life: a prose-poem for eaters and a spiritual companion for thoughtful cooks. A true and enduring joy’ Nigella Lawson
‘You can’t always feel buoyant and grateful but noticing – and getting pleasure from – the seemingly insignificant is a good way to live. As he says, feel the “small moments of joy”’ Diana Henry
Nigel Slater, a top author and best-seller, continues to captivate with his culinary narratives and non-fiction essays. His travelogues, filled with the scent of freshly picked sweet peas and the sound of water breathing at night in Japan, are a testament to his ability to find beauty in the smallest moments.
For fans of Wendy Macnaughton (Lost Cat), Rick Stein (Under a Mackerel Sky), Alice Waters (Always Home), and Stanley Tucci (What I Ate in One Year).
