For almost all of us the idea of being locked away in prison is a dreadful thought to consider. To be in that position, to get put away, for whatever reasons, for whatever pain or injury that was caused, whatever law was broken, the probability of years in a small, cramped space holds no appeal to anyone of reason and is almost always an absolute deterrent.

Whilst some of the characters in these stories deserve prison, others are the victims of a mis-carriage. Our authors including Victor Hugo, Franz Kafka, William Mudford and Vincente Blasco Ibanez explore life inside, and how many of the flawed characters of their stories cope with the undoubted stresses and deprivations that their lives now cause them. It is a harsh world in microcosm.

    The Secret Agent

"The Secret Agent" is a novel written by Joseph Conrad, and published in 1907. The story is set in London in the late nineteenth century and revolves around a group of anarchists and their plot to detonate a bomb at Greenwich Observatory. The novel explores themes such as terrorism, politics, morality, and betrayal. The novel's protagonist is Adolf Verloc, a seemingly unremarkable man who owns a small shop selling pornographic materials. However, he is also a secret agent working for an unnamed foreign embassy. Verloc is tasked with infiltrating a group of anarchists and providing intelligence on their activities.
The novel introduces several characters, including Verloc's wife Winnie, her mentally disabled brother Stevie, and the anarchists' leader, known as The Professor. As Verloc becomes more deeply involved with the anarchists, he is torn between his duty to his employer and his loyalty to his new friends.

The novel takes a critical view of both anarchism and the British intelligence service, questioning the morality of using violence to achieve political ends. The character of The Professor embodies the dark side of anarchism, as he is willing to sacrifice innocent lives for the sake of his political agenda. The novel also explores the complex relationships between the characters. Verloc's marriage to Winnie is strained, and his involvement in the anarchist plot only exacerbates their problems. Stevie is a sympathetic character, and his death at the hands of Verloc is a tragic turning point in the novel. Conrad's writing style is dense and complex, with a strong emphasis on psychological realism. He delves deep into the minds of his characters, exploring their motivations and fears. The novel also features Conrad's signature use of symbolism, with the Greenwich Observatory representing the watchful eye of society, and the bomb representing the destructive power of anarchism.

A man is found dead, lying at the bottom of the stairs to his flat, his body blocking the door of the elderly woman who lives downstairs.
The worried landlord who finds the body seeks advice from his friend's wife - now Detective Inspector Ariadne Moralis. Something in his demeanour hints at a hidden secret.
When it becomes apparent that the body has been moved, it is clear the man's death was not an accident.
With only an elderly witness who seems hesitant to disclose all she heard unless the price is right, and a key suspect on the run having fled the scene, Ariadne finds herself grasping at straws.
DNA evidence supports the witness's claims that the victim had two girlfriends, Carly is unwilling to cooperate. Lauren is missing.
The motive remains unclear, and the case becomes a confounding maze of unanswered questions, pushing Ariadne to her limits.
Meanwhile, Geraldine Steel, adjusting to the routine of new motherhood, longs for the thrill of being at the centre of an investigation. As the body count grows, and every lead seems to turn out to be a dead end, the case quickly throws up more questions than answers, and Ariadne is rapidly out of her depth.
Can her friend Geraldine Steel help her uncover the truth?

    Fairy godmothers who mean business!

The Beechwood Inn for paranormal beings is opening its doors once again, and the first event following the hiatus is a fairy godmother conference.

When the godmothers arrive, I expect them to bust out their knitting projects and sip tea, while they swap recipes and sweet stories of their cherubic charges. So, when the sitting room turns into a defensive magic combat zone and a boot camp style obstacle course is erected in the manor's backyard, I'm more than a little thrown off.

    Then the curse gets unleashed.

It's all hands—and paws—on deck, if we have a chance of saving the inn from the ravages of the strange and deadly magic.

Luckily for me, I just mastered how to levitate a feather. So, I should totally be able to save the day.
