Sinopsis

"I believe I've seen the end of the world... it's all smoke and noise and iron."

Margaret Hale, a parson's daughter from the genteel, sun-drenched South of England, is forced to move to the gritty, smoke-shrouded industrial town of Milton in the North. Horrified by the poverty and the harsh realities of the cotton mills, she quickly clashes with John Thornton, a self-made, stern mill owner who epitomizes the new manufacturing class. As strikes loom and the gap between "master and man" widens, Margaret and Thornton must navigate their deep-seated prejudices to find a common ground that could change both their lives forever.

The Heart of the Industrial Revolution: Gaskell provides a vivid, unflinching look at the birth of modern industry. Through Margaret's eyes, we witness the human cost of progress—the lung-clogging "fluff" of the mills, the desperation of the workers, and the rise of labor unions. Yet, through Thornton, we see the pride, ambition, and terrifying instability of the men who built the British Empire's economic engine.

A Romance for the Ages: Often called the "industrial Pride and Prejudice," the relationship between Margaret and Thornton is a masterclass in slow-burn tension. Their journey is not just one of romance, but of mutual education. Margaret learns to see the dignity in labor and the necessity of trade, while Thornton learns that authority without empathy is a recipe for ruin.

A Timeless Social Masterpiece: North and South remains startlingly relevant, exploring themes of economic inequality, religious doubt, and the struggle for women's agency in a male-dominated world. It is a story that proves that even in the coldest, most industrial heart, the warmth of human connection can still prevail.

Where iron meets heart. Purchase "North and South" today and experience the definitive industrial romance.

In the year leading up to the First World War, four people’s lives intertwine, only to be pulled apart. A landmark of gay and pacifist literature, Rose Allatini’s story foregrounding conscientious objectors and queer love amidst wartime turmoil was banned months after its publication.
At a countryside hotel, guests watch an amateur play. One of the actors, Antoinette de Courcy, is infatuated with Hester Cawthorn, a reserved and alluring woman. Dennis Blackwood, a gifted composer, is intrigued by Antoinette, sensing that they are alike. He meets Alan, and the two are instantly attracted to each other. Unlike Antoinette’s determined pursuit of Hester, Dennis wholly represses his sexuality. With the war looming, families are torn apart by personal politics: the men around Dennis embrace the patriotic cause and sign up to fight. Dennis, however, knows that embracing peace is the only possible way to live. He attempts to stamp out his powerful desire for Alan by focusing all attention on Antoinette. Yet this only leads to mutual unfulfilment, and understanding comes too late. Each day, as Dennis and others defend themselves in public court and private circles, the likelihood of forced enrolment or imprisonment grows.Despised and Rejected is part of the Persephone Audiobook Collection, a series of forgotten classics including neglected fiction and non-fiction by women writers. First published in 1918, this edition includes an afterword by Jonathan Cutbill and is narrated by Robyn Holdaway.

William Sydney Porter was born on 11th September 1862 in Greensboro, North Carolina. At age 3 his mother died from tuberculosis. From an early age it was clear Porter had a large appetite for reading as he absorbed the world around him.
He first attended at a school run by his aunt before enrolling at the Lindsey Street High School and then worked at his uncle’s drugstore and gained a pharmacists’ license in 1881.
A persistent cough took him to Texas in the hope that a change of climate would help his symptoms. He took on various types of work, initially from ranch hand and cook and then as varied as pharmacist, draftsman, bank teller and journalist. He also began to write, though for now, purely as a hobby.
He was a member of several singing and dramatic groups when he met 17 year old Athol Estes, daughter of a wealthy Austin family. Despite her mother’s objection owing to Athol’s tuberculosis, they began courting and in July 1887, they eloped and soon married.
Athol, impressed by his writing, encouraged him to get them published. A job as a draftsman at the Texas General Land Office paid a healthy $100 dollars per month and life was good.
But then life turned cruel. His son died a few hours after birth although a daughter, Margaret, came the following year. His job had to be vacated but another was found at the First National Bank of Austin. The bank operated informally and Porter was careless in keeping the books. He lost that job but began writing for the humourous weekly The Rolling Stone and the Houston Post. Some time later the federal Bank auditors went through his former accounts and he was arrested on charges of embezzlement.
Porter fled the day before his trial to Honduras. Holed up for several months he began to write. Athol had become too ill to travel to meet him and learning that her health was deteriorating he surrendered to the court in February 1897. Bail was obtained so that he could stay with Athol during her final days.
Porter was sentenced to five years at the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus. His pharmacy qualifications got him the job of night druggist. His sentence also gave him time to write and publish fourteen short stories. In December 1899 in McClure’s Magazine he published a short story as O Henry.
He was released two years early in July 1901, and reunited with Margaret, now 11, in Pittsburgh. He now began his most prolific period of writing; a short story per week for the New York World, while also publishing works in other magazines. Eventually over 600 of his short stories were published.
Porter was a heavy drinker and in 1908 his health, which had deteriorated for several years, took a dramatic turn for the worse, as did his writing.
O Henry died of cirrhosis of the liver complicated by diabetes and an enlarged heart on 5th June 1910.<

Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ considered "the most influential Christian book of the nineteenth century". It became a best-selling American novel and remained at the top of the bestseller lists until the publication of Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind. The story recounts in descriptive detail the adventures of Judah Ben-Hur, a fictional Jewish prince from Jerusalem who is enslaved by the Romans at the beginning of the 1st century and becomes a charioteer and a Christian. Running in parallel with Judah's narrative is the unfolding story of Jesus, who comes from the same region and is a similar age. The novel reflects themes of betrayal, conviction, and redemption, with a revenge plot that leads to a story of love and compassion.

Delve into a story of love, regret, and second chances with Persuasion, Jane Austen’s poignant final novel. Anne Elliot, a thoughtful and kind-hearted woman, was once persuaded to break off her engagement to the man she deeply loved, Captain Frederick Wentworth, due to his lack of wealth and status. Now, eight years later, Anne remains unmarried and quietly endures life with her snobbish family.
When Captain Wentworth returns, wealthy and successful, their paths cross again. Amidst the intricate social dynamics of Regency England, Anne must navigate her lingering feelings for him while grappling with the pressures of family, society, and her own sense of self-worth.
