Sinopse

North and South is a social novel by Elizabeth Gaskell, first serialized in 1854 in Household Words, a magazine edited by Charles Dickens, and published in book form in 1855. The novel contrasts the industrialized North of England with the more genteel, rural South, as seen through the experiences of the protagonist, Margaret Hale.

Elizabeth Gaskell (1810–1865), also known as Mrs. Gaskell, was a prominent British novelist and short story writer during the Victorian era. She is best known for her detailed portrayals of British society, particularly the struggles of the working class, women, and the impoverished. Gaskell's works often explore the intersection of social issues, class conflict, gender roles, and the effects of industrialization.

That got me to thinking. What if Beacher remembered my name was Horton, not Tolbert? And, what would he do if he found out I had shot my superior officer and deserted the Army? I was probably reported missing in the Indian fight and presumed dead. A lot of them fort Captains left missing men on their pay roster and collected the wages themselves. They considered it as their retirement fund. They'd just give the pay master a nice raise and if he didn't want to, they'd just reassign him to the next Indian raid.

One of the masterpieces of classical literature, the "Histories" describes how a small and quarrelsome band of Greek city states united to repel the might of the Persian empire. But while this epic struggle forms the core of his work, Herodotus' natural curiosity frequently gives rise to colorful digressions - a description of the natural wonders of Egypt; an account of European lake-dwellers; and far-fetched accounts of dog-headed men and gold-digging ants. With its kaleidoscopic blend of fact and legend, the "Histories" offers a compelling Greek view of the world of the fifth century BC.
BOOK 4: MELPOMENE: After the taking of Babylon, an expedition was led by Darius into Scythia. Asia abounding in men, and vast sums flowing into the treasury, the desire seized him to exact vengeance from the Scyths, who had once in days gone by invaded Media, defeated those who met them in the field, and so begun the quarrel.
