Sinopse

In "The Grey Woman and Other Tales," Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell masterfully weaves a collection of Gothic narratives that explore themes of societal constraints, female identity, and moral dilemmas. Each story is infused with Gaskell's hallmark psychological depth and social commentary, employing a rich, descriptive prose style that vividly captures the complexities of her characters and their circumstances. Against the backdrop of Victorian England, Gaskell delves into the shadows of domestic spaces, rendering an atmosphere that oscillates between the eerie and the profoundly human, making this collection a compelling reflection of the era's anxieties and aspirations. Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell was a prominent novelist, biographer, and social campaigner, whose works often highlighted the struggles of women in a patriarchal society. Her background, steeped in the realities of industrial life and her own experiences as a wife and mother, informed her keen insights into the female condition. Gaskell's engagement with the social issues of her time, including the plight of the working class and women's rights, served as fertile ground for the psychological and moral complexities encapsulated in these tales. This collection is highly recommended for readers interested in Gothic literature, feminist perspectives, and the social dynamics of the Victorian era. Gaskell's adept storytelling, along with her nuanced portrayals of women navigating the challenges of their roles, makes "The Grey Woman and Other Tales" a quintessential read that resonates with contemporary audiences.

"The Alchemist" is a short story by American writer H. P. Lovecraft. It was written in 1908, when Lovecraft was 17 or 18, and first published in the November 1916 issue of the United Amateur.
The story is recounted by the protagonist, Count Antoine de C, in the first person. Hundreds of years ago, Antoine's noble ancestor was responsible for the death of a dark wizard, Michel Mauvais. The wizard's son, Charles le Sorcier, swore revenge on not only him but all his descendants, cursing them to die on reaching the age of 32.
The protagonist recounts how his ancestors all died in some mysterious way around the age of 32. The line has dwindled and the castle has been left to fall into disrepair, tower by tower. Finally, Antoine is the only one left, with one poor servant, Pierre, who raised him, and a tiny section of the castle with a single tower is still usable. Antoine has reached adulthood, and his 32nd year is approaching...

A brutal murder. A seaside village drenched in fog. A vile history . . .

Aaron Andrews, a newly-minted doctor, returns to the village of Aetherton to take up his late father's practice. Hopes of easing into his new role and restoring the local clinic are dashed, however, when the disfigured body of a child is discovered in an empty flowerbed. Working closely with Evander Cochrane, the village's sole law enforcement officer, Andrews is forced to admit that the girl's death is anything but natural.

The deeper Andrews and Cochrane dive into the grisly crime, the more they learn about the village's sordid history. Though pleasant and easygoing on the surface, Aetherton's past holds many things—some of them remarkably dark. The village is soon visited by a powerful storm, leaving it without power or access to the outside world.

When the seaside village becomes entombed with fog, something begins to walk its footpaths and haunt its shores—something that should not exist . . .

On their weekly walk, an eminently sensible, trustworthy lawyer named Mr. Utterson listens as his friend Enfield tells a gruesome tale of assault. The tale describes a sinister figure named Mr. Hyde who tramples a young girl, disappears into a door on the street, and reemerges to pay off her relatives with a check signed by a respectable gentleman. Since both Utterson and Enfield disapprove of gossip, they agree to speak no further of the matter. It happens, however, that one of Utterson’s clients and close friends, Dr. Jekyll, has written a will transferring all of his property to this same Mr. Hyde. Soon, Utterson begins having dreams in which a faceless figure stalks through a nightmarish version of London.

Puzzled, the lawyer visits Jekyll and their mutual friend Dr. Lanyon to try to learn more. Lanyon reports that he no longer sees much of Jekyll since they had a dispute over the course of Jekyll’s research, which Lanyon calls “unscientific balderdash.” Curious, Utterson stakes out a building that Hyde visits—which, it turns out, is a laboratory attached to the back of Jekyll’s home. Encountering Hyde, Utterson is amazed by how undefinably ugly the man seems as if deformed, though Utterson cannot say exactly how. Much to Utterson’s surprise, Hyde willingly offers Utterson his address. Jekyll tells Utterson not to concern himself with the matter of Hyde.

A year passes uneventfully. Then, one night, a servant girl witnesses Hyde brutally beat to death an old man named Sir Danvers Carew, a member of Parliament and a client of Utterson. The police contact Utterson, and Utterson suspects Hyde as the murderer. He leads the officers to Hyde’s apartment, feeling a sense of foreboding amid the eerie weather—the morning is dark and wreathed in fog. When they arrive at the apartment, the murderer has vanished, and police searches prove futile.
