Sinopsis

In "Following the Guidon," Elizabeth Bacon Custer delves into her life as the wife of General George Armstrong Custer during the Indian Wars of the late 19th century. This memoir, rich with personal anecdotes and vivid descriptions, paints a complex portrait of military life and the challenges faced by women on the frontier. Custer employs a first-person narrative style that is both intimate and engaging, creating a blend of historical context and personal reflection. As she navigates themes of loyalty, courage, and patriotism, the reader is transported into a world of tumultuous change, underscored by a lyrical prose that encapsulates the trials and tribulations experienced during this transformative era in American history. Elizabeth Bacon Custer, born into a prominent New York family, was instilled with a sense of adventure and a commitment to her husband's legacy. Her experiences accompanying Custer on military campaigns provided her with a unique perspective on the socio-political climate of her time, sparking her desire to document the interplay between gender roles and military leadership. This memoir is not solely an account of events but also reflects her profound emotional journey through love and loss. "Following the Guidon" is an essential read for anyone interested in American history, military narratives, and the often-overlooked perspectives of women in wartime. Custer's eloquent storytelling invites readers to explore the complexities of her life while revealing broader truths about a nation at war. This memoir not only honors her husband's legacy but also stands as a testament to the resilience of those who lived on the periphery of history.

Fiction books have been written about him. Documentaries have revealed the horrors he executed on innocent victims in concentration camps in Poland. Meet Dr. Josef Mengele, a man with a twisted mind who had no compassion for the subjects he experimented on. His methods were cruel. His conclusions were inconclusive, and his sadism hardly knew any boundaries.
At the time of The Second World War, Josef Mengele, typically referred to as the Angel of Death, was a German Schutzstaffel (SS) officer and cosmetic surgeon. He is known for his exploits at the Auschwitz prisoner-of-war camp, where he carried out deadly experiments on slaves and belonged of the team of medical professionals that chose victims for the gas chambers and was just one of the medical professionals who administered the gas.
If this is the kind of stuff you like to read about or listen to, then this book is definitely for you. Find out the truth and count yourself lucky that you never fell victim to his sickening methods.

Opened on February 17, 1929, the Mississippi State Preventorium operated continuously until 1976. The Mississippi Preventorium, like similar hospitals throughout the country, was an institution for sickly, anemic, and underweight children. It was established on the grounds of the Mississippi State Tuberculosis Sanitorium in the early years of the twentieth century when tuberculosis was a dreaded disease worldwide. The TB Sanitorium hospital housed those with tuberculosis, offering refuge for patients of all ages afflicted with the pernicious and contagious disease. Although located on the same medical campus, the preventorium was a separate medical institution for children; no children with TB were admitted in the sixty-year run of the hospital. The name preventorium meant a place of preventing disease as there was a fear of sickly children contracting TB. The Mississippi Preventorium was one of the last, if not the very last, of these special hospitals for children.

Now closed, the preventorium housed over three thousand children, including author Susan Annah Currie. In this intimate memoir, Currie details her fifteen-month stay at the preventorium. From her arrival in May 1959 at six years old, Currie vividly explores the unique and isolating world that she and children across the country experienced. Her exacting routine, dictated by the nurses and doctors who now acted as her parents, erased the distinction between patients and created both a sense of community among the children and a deep sense of loneliness. From walking silently single file through the cold, narrow halls of the hospital to nurses recording every detail of their bathroom habits to extremely limited visitation from family, Currie's time at the preventorium changed her and those around her, leaving an indelible mark even after their return home.

While many of the records from the preventorium have been lost, Currie's memoir opens to readers a lost history largely forgotten. Told in evocative prose, The Preventorium explores Currie's personal trials, both in the hospital and in the echoes of her experiences into adulthood.
