Sinopsis

In 'Poems You Ought to Know', Elia Wilkinson Peattie offers readers a curated anthology that transcends the simplicity of verse and delves into the rich tapestry of human emotion and experience. As an accomplished writer attuned to the intricacies of literary tradition, Peattie's selection encapsulates both the aesthetic beauty of poetry and its enduring power to resonate across ages. The careful reconstruction by DigiCat Publishing enhances the accessibility of this collection, ensuring that the stylistic nuances and the profound context are preserved in a contemporary format that bridges the chasm between past and present literary landscapes.

Elia Wilkinson Peattie, a figure grounded in the literary scene of her time, epitomized the dual roles of both a keen observer and a participatory chronicler of the socio-cultural milieu. Her astute selections reflect her expansive insight into the human condition—a tapestry woven with the threads of her own experiences as a writer, journalist, and critic. This anthology represents not only Peattie's refined taste but also her implicit argument for the universal relevance of poetry—a testament to her belief in the didactic as well as the aesthetic function of literature.

'Poems You Ought to Know' is recommended for those who seek to embark on a journey through the landscape of human thought and emotion as portrayed in poetry. Its rich assembly is a treasure trove for connoisseurs and casual readers alike, offering a wellspring of wisdom, beauty, and introspection. In this collection, Peattie extends an invitation to all: to explore, to reflect, and to find solace and inspiration in the enduring art form that connects us all—poetry.

Having developed an impressive reputation for his many novels and non-fiction works, Richard Wagamese now presents a collection of stunning poems ranging over a broad landscape. He begins with an immersion in the unforgettable world where “the ancient ones stand at your shoulder … making you a circle / containing everything.”
These are Medicine teachings told from the experience of one who lived and still lives them. He also describes his life on the road when he repeatedly ran away at an early age, and the beatings he received when the authorities tried “to beat the Indian right out of me.” Yet even in the most desperate situations, Wagamese shows us Canada as seen through the eyes and soul of a well-worn traveller, with his love of country, his love of people. Through it all, there are poems of love and music, the language sensuous and tender.

Gibran Khalil Gibran was born on 6th January 1883 in the village of Bsharri, Beirut Vilayet, then part of the Ottoman Empire
His mother took him and his siblings to the United States in 1895 where he was enrolled into a Boston school and his creative talents soon noted. He was sent home to be schooled at the Collège de la Sagesse in Beirut but returned to Boston following the death of his youngest sister in 1902. Within a year his mother had also died.
In 1904, Gibran's drawings were displayed for the first time and, a year later, his first book, in Arabic, was published in New York City. With financial help from a benefactress he studied art in Paris from 1908 and here his path crossed with dissident Syrian exiles. Over the years he would meet many more like-minded exiles who were exploring ways to overthrow the yoke of the Ottoman Empire.
By 1911 he had settled in New York working on his drawings and paintings which were now being regularly exhibited. His writing was also attracting much attention and gaining an audience.
His first book in English, ‘The Madman’ became an international phenomenon. Whilst his writing has overshadowed his visual works there is no doubt that a copy of ‘The Mad Man’ is never far from any bookshelf. This and other works have ensured his stature as an artist is world-wide and that it continues into these more modern times. Gibran was regarded as a literary rebel and a leading figure of the Arabic literary Renaissance and made influential contributions to Western poetry, stories and thought.
Khalil Gibran died on 10th April 1931 in New York City from cirrhosis and incipient tuberculosis in one lung. He was 48.
