Sinopse

"The Final Theory" explores the ambitious quest for a Theory of Everything, aiming to unify quantum mechanics and general relativity into a single, elegant framework. This endeavor seeks to reconcile the probabilistic nature of the subatomic world with gravity's geometric interpretation, a challenge that has captivated theoretical physicists for decades. The book delves into why unifying these concepts is so difficult, while also highlighting the profound implications of achieving this unification, potentially revolutionizing our understanding of the universe's fundamental nature and allowing predictions under extreme conditions.

The book traces the historical development of this quest, beginning with Einstein's unified field theory attempts and progressing through the contributions of key figures in quantum theory. Examining candidate theories like string theory and loop quantum gravity, the book details their frameworks, strengths, and experimental challenges.

"The Final Theory" emphasizes the interplay between theoretical advancements and empirical evidence, showcasing the crucial role of experimental verification.

The book concludes by considering the philosophical and cosmological implications of a potential Theory of Everything, addressing fundamental questions about the universe's origin, dark matter, dark energy, and ultimate fate.

What is a meteor or meteorite? A meteor is a small body of matter apparently from outer space that upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere resembles a streak of light, what we normally call falling stars. A meteorite is one of these that successfully hits the ground and sometimes other things, including people, buildings and animals!
Until 1803 most scientists regarded falls of meteorites as absurd and fantastical. As well as impossible. This was until the massive fall onto L’Aigle in France of thousands of meteorites on April 23rd 1803. Previously on November 11th 1799 there had also been a massive meteor shower comprising thousands of meteors that was seen all over the Earth. This is now known to be the Leonid meteors whose falls have diminished since. The Leonids come around every November, usually near the beginning of the month. Funny how this is a peak period for UFO sightings! That was accepted meteorites. Then you have such things as Black Comets. Black comets are extinct cometary nuclei which no longer create outgassing. No tail is visible. They are black and difficult to see in space unless they are passing celestial bodies. Even these seem apparently normal when you look at everything that has come crashing down, sometimes heavily and sometimes lightly, from the skies. Amongst the true meteorites and possible fragment of black comets, and possibly even antimatter, and even large blocks of ice, what then are the rest of these? That the majority of UFO sightings might actually be misidentified meteoric or cometary bodies. The list of incidents from the sky including numerous near misses. Are they meteors, comets or UFOs or a combination or misinterpretation of all of the above?

Science for a Green New Deal -...

Since it was first proposed in the US House of Representatives, the Green New Deal has been hotly debated. The intent was not simply to fight climate change or address a specific environmental concern, but rather to tackle how climate change and other environmental challenges affect the economy, the vulnerable, and social justice—and vice versa.

In Science for a Green New Deal, Eric Davidson dissects this legislative resolution. He also shows how green new deal thinking offers a framework for a convergence of the natural sciences, social science, economics, and community engagement to develop holistic policy solutions to the most pressing issues of our day. Davidson weaves the case for linkages among multiple global crises, including a pandemic that has reversed progress on fighting poverty and hunger, an acceleration of climate change, and a renewed awareness of profound social injustices highlighted by the Black Lives Matter movement.

Illustrating these points with his personal life experiences as a child growing up in Montana and as a famed researcher leading a large scientific society, Davidson relates these complex challenges to our everyday lives and decision-making. Science for a Green New Deal is a realistic and optimistic look at how we can attain a more sustainable, prosperous, and just future.

Much ink has been spilled in recent years talking about political divides and inequality in the United States. But these discussions too often miss one of the most important factors in the divisions among Americans: the fundamentally unequal nature of the nation's housing systems.

And this divide deepens other inequalities. Increasingly, important life outcomes—performance in school, employment, even life expectancy—are determined by where people live and the quality of homes they live in.

Public policies enacted by federal, state, and local governments helped create and reinforce the bad housing outcomes endured by too many people. Taxes, zoning, institutional discrimination, and the location and quality of schools, roads, public transit, and other public services are among the policies that created inequalities in the nation's housing patterns.

Fixer-Upper is the first book assessing how the broad set of local, state, and national housing policies affect people and communities. It proposes practical policy changes than can make stable, decent-quality housing more available and affordable for all Americans in all communities.
