Sinopsis

Newton's Apple masterfully traces the evolution of gravitational theory from Isaac Newton's famous falling apple observation to its profound impact on modern science and technology. This comprehensive exploration bridges historical discovery with contemporary applications, demonstrating how a simple observation revolutionized our understanding of the universe and continues to shape scientific advancement today.

The book's three-part structure offers readers a compelling journey through time, beginning with the scientific climate of the 17th century and Newton's groundbreaking insights. It then transitions into clear explanations of gravitational principles, including gravitational fields and orbital mechanics, before culminating in an examination of modern applications in satellite technology and space exploration.

Throughout the narrative, complex concepts are presented with accessible language and practical examples, making advanced physics concepts comprehensible to science enthusiasts and educated general readers alike. What sets this book apart is its interdisciplinary approach, weaving together historical documentation, mathematical principles, and current research from prestigious institutions like NASA and CERN.

The author expertly demonstrates how Newton's fundamental theory continues to influence multiple fields, from quantum gravity to aerospace engineering, while addressing contemporary challenges in gravitational physics. By connecting historical discovery with modern applications, readers gain a deep appreciation for both the historical significance and ongoing relevance of gravitational theory in our daily lives and future technological developments.

Wernher von Braun ( March 23, 1912 – June 16, 1977) was a German aerospace engineer and space architect. He was the leading figure in the development of rocket technology in Nazi Germany and a pioneer of space technology and science in the United States.
After World War II, von Braun was secretly moved to the US, along with roughly 1,600 other German scientists, engineers, and technicians, as part of Operation Paperclip. He worked for the United States Army on an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) program, and he developed the rockets that launched the United States' first space satellite Explorer 1.
He served as director of the Marshall Space Flight Center and as the chief architect of the Saturn V super heavy-lift launch vehicle that propelled the Apollo spacecraft to the Moon. In 1955, von Braun became a naturalized citizen of the United States. In 1975, von Braun received the National Medal of Science. This recording is from Dr. Von Braun's speech at the 1st Annual SOLE Symposium, September 13, 1966, in Huntsville Alabama.

Slippery, wet, and strange: Fish can be easier to think of as food than as fellow animals. But what do we know about these creatures we meet on our dinner table and how they got there? But with warming oceans, diminishing fish stocks, and questions about fish farming practices, where will the fish come from?

In Every Last Fish, Rose George dives into these questions by exploring the vast industries that support our appetite for fish sticks and salmon burgers, and the colossal illegal fishing trade whose practices and standards are unmonitored and often dangerous. Journeying to the bottom of the ocean and back, she examines the machinations of this $200 billion food system―one that's growing rapidly even as fish populations disappear.

Along the way, George introduces us to the people on the front lines of fishes and fishing: fishermen, divers, marine biologists, fish fryers, and fishwives. Her journey ends at the fish counter, with guidance for listeners looking to make better choices, both for the ocean's health and their own.

Ranging from Alaska to the United Kingdom to Senegal and beyond, Every Last Fish is an unforgettable trip through the ocean's inhabitants and workers.
