Sinopse

"Timeless Moral Codes" explores the fascinating continuity of fundamental ethical principles throughout human history, revealing how basic moral guidelines have remained remarkably consistent across different cultures and time periods.

The book demonstrates how ancient civilizations, from Mesopotamia to Classical Greece, developed strikingly similar moral frameworks that continue to resonate in today's world, suggesting these principles are intrinsic to human social organization rather than merely cultural constructs. Through a methodical examination of archaeological findings, historical documents, and philosophical texts, the book illuminates how core ethical principles—such as prohibitions against theft, the value of truthfulness, and community obligations—emerge repeatedly across civilizations.

The analysis draws compelling parallels between ancient moral codes like the Code of Hammurabi and contemporary ethical challenges, showing how these age-old principles remain relevant in addressing modern dilemmas in technology, business, and social relations. The book progresses systematically through three main sections, beginning with historical moral codes, moving to cross-cultural ethical themes, and concluding with practical applications for modern life.

Written in an accessible yet scholarly style, it bridges the gap between academic philosophy and practical wisdom, offering readers both theoretical understanding and actionable insights for ethical decision-making in contemporary situations. This comprehensive approach, combining historical analysis with practical application, makes the book particularly valuable for those seeking to understand how ancient wisdom can inform modern moral choices.

Several schools of Zen developed in China in the 9th century. The Rinzai (Chinese, Lin-chi) sect of Zen was introduced to Japan by the Chinese priest Ensai in 1191. Rinzai Buddhism emphasizes the use of koans, paradoxical puzzles or questions that help the practitioner to overcome the normal boundaries of logic. Koans are often accompanied by shouts or slaps from the master, intended to provoke anxiety, leading to instant realization of the truth. These teachings influenced the warrior class and led to a Zen influence over the martial arts of archery and swordsmanship.
Soto Buddhism (Chinese, Ts'ao-tung) is another Zen sect that was transmitted from China to Japan. It arrived in Japan in 1227 upon the teacher Dogen's return from China. Soto emphasizes zazen, or sitting meditation, as the means to attain enlightenment. The Soto practitioner is encouraged to clear the mind of all thoughts and concepts, without making any effort towards enlightenment, until enlightenment occurs.
Whatever the method of reaching enlightenment, once reached we realize the state of enlightenment we sought was there within us all along. The method is the gate, but there need not be any gate, since the gate is always open. This is the gateless gate. Now, let us enter the Gateless Gate.

Borders are not just meaningless geographical lines. They have an impact on all of our lives, whether it's the fallout from Brexit or the inhumanity of a detention center. In Border Nation, Leah Cowan shows how borders are violent, oppressive, and must be resisted. Looking back, we learn of the elitist, colonial, and patriarchal origins of borders, explore the vital history of anti-racist, anti-border organizing and hear stories from people who have crossed partitions. Debunking myths around migration, Leah Cowan unpacks the 'hostile environment' and reveals how healthcare crises, terrorism, unemployment, and housing shortages are often manipulated by politicians and the media to vilify migrants. As borders grow, migrants are policed, and immigration controls are tightened, this book transforms our understanding of borders, migration, and our fight for belonging.

Delphine was 4 years old when her hell began.
"We always promised each other, my Mom and I, that we would not talk about it anymore, that it was over. Except that after this promise, which I never broke, I had many bad times to go through. I was always trying to find out why I felt so bad about myself, why the fear of dying came over me again, as in childhood. I gradually became aware that this feeling of uneasiness probably came from the drifting in and out of hospitals that I had experienced from a very young age, from the way my mother manipulated me, from all this sadness, and these fears, all these emotions had been so well repressed for years. My mind doesn't want to remember but my body hasn't forgotten anything and was letting me know."
Munchhausen syndrome by proxy is a severe form of child abuse in which the adult caregiver deliberately causes serious and repeated health problems in the child before taking the child to a doctor.
Afterword by Dr. Stéphanie Dauver, child psychiatrist, who wrote her thesis on Munchhausen syndrome by proxy.
