This study of the ancient historian’s work is “excellent . . . [A] rigorous and engaging introduction not only to Herodotus, but to many other Greek authors” (Times Literary Supplement).

In the fifth century BCE, Herodotus wrote the first known Western history to build on the tradition of Homeric storytelling, basing his text on empirical observations and arranging them systematically. Herodotus and the Question Why offers a comprehensive examination of the methods behind the Histories and the challenge of documenting human experiences, from the Persian Wars to cultural traditions.

In lively, accessible prose, Christopher Pelling explores such elements as reconstructing the mentalities of storyteller and audience alike; distinctions between the human and the divine; and the evolving concepts of freedom, democracy, and individualism. Pelling traces the similarities between Herodotus’s approach to physical phenomena (Why does the Nile flood?) and to landmark events (Why did Xerxes invade Greece? And why did the Greeks win?), delivering a fascinating look at the explanatory process itself. The cultural forces that shaped Herodotus’s thinking left a lasting legacy for us, making Herodotus and the Question Why especially relevant as we try to record and narrate the stories of our time and to fully understand them.

The Pen & Sword guide to the census is detailed, accessible and authoritative, and it is one of the most comprehensive on the market. It has been written with the family historian in mind, and it is packed with advice on how to explore and get the most from the census records. As well as describing the modern censuses, it provides information on the less-known censuses dating from before 1841, and it covers the records of all the constituent parts of the British Isles. It is an essential introduction and tool for anyone who is researching the life and times of an ancestor. Emma Jolly describes how and why census records came to be created, then looks in detail at how to search the main censuses from 1841 to 1911. Each chapter covers the relevant historical context, compares online and other sources, identifies problems like lost or damaged records, and shows how the specific information in the census concerned can be interpreted effectively. While the censuses of England and Wales, Scotland, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are all examined, the main focus is on the English and Welsh census, with differences noted for other areas. An extensive appendix and bibliography, which, for ease of access, gathers together all the key resources in one place, is also provided.

Sigmund Freud’s “The Interpretation of Dreams” has been described as one of the most important books of the 20th century. As a result of the perception, however, that it is a lengthy and complex work, Freud embarked on the task of compiling a more brief and simplified version of his ideas on the interpretation of dreams. The results of this labour are presented in "On Dreams".From the time of its appearance, a large and loyal audience of scholars, experts and curious readers have relied on this work for a trusted and systematic exposition of Freud's theory of dreams.Freud first introduces his theory of the unconscious in terms of dream interpretation, and then portrays dreams as wish-fulfilment – creations of of the subconscious that serve to digest events or feelings, past or recent, that are buried and unresolved. Professionals, students and laymen alike will enjoy this simple and authoritative version of an always-relevant theory of dream interpretation by one of the key early progenitors of modern psychoanalysis.

Hi:) I’m Amy Applebaum. And I’m really glad you are here!
As a business owner who has made millions and a Life Success coach who has coached dozens of ambitious women (and some men), I believe very strongly that success is just as much about ‘how you think’ as it is ‘what you do’.
Success is first and foremost an Inside Job.
I have seen it in my own life.
I’ve seen it with the entrepreneurs and industry leaders I have worked with whose lives have been wildly transformed just by changing their thoughts and then taking actions on those new beliefs.
Let’s face it. We have a lot on our plate. And those of us who are running our own businesses even more so.
We are giving so much to the world around us.
But things won’t shift until we get those birds on our shoulders to stop the negative chitchat.
And the best fastest way to cut the self-doubt in its tracks is through meditation.
And I make doing meditation dead easy.
My MOVE collections are guided meditations.
You don’t have to learn the ‘ins and outs ’of meditation.
All you need to do is throw those earbuds in and drift off to sleep!
Downloaded over 500,000 times on places like iTunes and Audible, my MOVE meditations don’t just ‘relax’ and destress, they are specifically designed to help you get MOVING and unstuck.
So that you can finally live the life you have always wanted!
“In just a short period of time I’ve noticed that it’s made a significant difference in my life. The confidence and money-making downloads have been especially helpful. I’ve been telling friends and family about them ever since. Thank you so much for your time, and for the benefit I’ve already gotten from your amazing meditations.” ~ David Menconi

    Treaty Justice - The Northwest...

In 1974, Judge George Boldt issued a ruling that affirmed the fishing rights and tribal sovereignty of Native nations in Washington State. The Boldt Decision transformed Indigenous law and resource management across the United States and beyond. The case also brought about far-reaching societal changes, reinforcing tribal sovereignty and remedying decades of injustice.Eminent legal historian and tribal advocate Charles Wilkinson tells the story of the Boldt Decision against the backdrop of salmon's central place in the cultures and economies of the Pacific Northwest. In the 1960s, Native people reasserted their fishing rights as delineated in nineteenth-century treaties. In response, state officials worked with non-Indian commercial and sport fishing interests to forcefully oppose Native actions. These "fish wars" spurred twenty tribes and the United States government to file suit in federal court. Boldt pointedly waited until Lincoln's birthday to hand down a decision recognizing the tribes' right to half of the state's fish. The case's aftermath led from the Supreme Court's affirmation of Boldt's opinion to collaborative management of the harvest of salmon.Treaty Justice weaves personalities and local detail into the definitive account of one of the twentieth century's most important civil rights cases.
