Summary

‘MARSTON HAS TAPPED INTO A RICH VEIN OF INSPIRATION. HIS HOME FRONT DETECTIVE SERIES PROMISES A LONG RUN’ DAILY MAIL
June, 1917. While German bombers raid London from above, a man’s body is fished from the Thames below. With no identifying items or labels about his person, Detective Inspector Marmion and Sergeant Keedy waste precious time struggling to name the anonymous victim before they can properly begin their investigation. One by one family and business associates are traced, which only makes the list of suspects ever longer. Between the interminable presence of war and, closer to home, pitched battles in the East End between rival gangs, Marmion must carefully tread a dangerous path to lead him towards the killer.

Book 13: Psychic VisionsQueenie Landry's job as a fortune teller at an amusement park pays the bills but it's a far cry from the respectable psychic advisor role she once filled at the police station where the love of her life, Kirk Wallace, was a detective. A case went bad when she steered the team in the wrong direction and a woman died. Queenie experienced a horrific crisis of faith in her own abilities and pushed everyone away. Nine months later, alone and denying her psychic gift, she gives birth to a son and feels redeemed. But a happily-ever-after isn't to be. Following a severe illness, Queenie wakes up eighteen months later only to be told her son died. Unable to handle her grief, she opens herself once more to her abilities, desperate to connect with her child. Resigned to telling fortunes at the park, she's stunned when a man walks into her tent and she sees a vision of a woman he's murdered. She realizes she has to contact Kirk again. Kirk left under duress. Though he regrets his decision, he's never forgotten Queenie or found anyone to replace her. Having to be the one to tell her about her son's death all but destroyed him because he knew it would unhinge her and he isn't sure how she'll ever find stability again. Unknown to either of them, someone has been watching her for a long time, someone who likes to play games with other people's lives, as he has Queenie's. But even he's confused by the creepy spiders amassing all around her. What message are they trying to convey to her that she's stubbornly refused to hear, and what price will she have to pay if she fails?

From the author of A Prayer for Owen Meany and The World According to Garp comes "his most daringly political, sexually transgressive, and moving novel in well over a decade" (Vanity Fair).A New York Times bestselling novel of desire, secrecy, and sexual identity, In One Person is a story of unfulfilled love—tormented, funny, and affecting—and an impassioned embrace of our sexual differences. Billy, the bisexual narrator and main character of In One Person, tells the tragicomic story (lasting more than half a century) of his life as a "sexual suspect," a phrase first used by John Irving in 1978 in his landmark novel of "terminal cases," The World According to Garp.In One Person is a poignant tribute to Billy’s friends and lovers—a theatrical cast of characters who defy category and convention. Not least, In One Person is an intimate and unforgettable portrait of the solitariness of a bisexual man who is dedicated to making himself "worthwhile."

"The Musgrave Ritual" is a short story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, featuring his fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. The story was originally published in Strand Magazine in 1919, and was collected later in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. Unlike the majority of Holmes stories, the main narrator is not Doctor Watson, but Sherlock Holmes himself. With Watson providing an introduction, the story within a story is a classic example of a frame tale. It is one of the earliest recorded cases investigated by Holmes, and establishes his problem solving skills.
In the story, Holmes recounts to Watson the events arising after a visit from a university acquaintance, Reginald Musgrave. Musgrave visits Holmes after the disappearance of two of his domestic staff, Rachel Howells, a maid, and Richard Brunton, the longtime butler. The pair vanished after Musgrave had dismissed Brunton for secretly reading a family document, the Musgrave Ritual. The Ritual, which dates from the 17th century, is a riddle set in question/response form.
