Humanism is a philosophical and ethical stance that emphasizes the value and agency of human beings, individually and collectively. At its core, humanism advocates for the belief that humans are capable of leading meaningful lives based on reason, ethics, and justice. It is grounded in the understanding that humans have the capacity for rational thought, empathy, and creativity, which are fundamental to the flourishing of individuals and societies.
The roots of humanism can be traced back to the classical civilizations of Greece and Rome, where the focus was on human potential and the pursuit of knowledge. However, it gained significant momentum during the Renaissance, a period marked by a renewed interest in classical antiquity and a shift away from religious dogma toward human-centered exploration. Renaissance thinkers, such as Petrarch and Erasmus, championed the importance of human dignity, education, and the ability to shape one's own destiny through knowledge and reason. These principles would later influence the development of modern humanist thought.
Unlike religious philosophies that place divine beings at the center of moral order, humanism is secular in nature. It does not rely on supernatural explanations or interventions, but rather promotes the idea that humans themselves are responsible for creating meaning and morality in their lives. Humanism calls for an ethical framework based on reason, scientific inquiry, and compassion, with the goal of improving human well-being and contributing to the common good.

Before the twentieth century ships when relied upon visual signaling, vessels beyond range of sight or a cannon shot, were blind, deaf, and dumb in the dark, making night battles at sea rare, and near always accidental. The introduction of certain technologies like the torpedo, the searchlight, radio, and then radar, transformed naval warfare by making night combat feasible and, in some cases, desirable. The process by which navies integrated these new tools of war and turned the dark into a medium for effective combat, however, was long and difficult.

Fighting in the Dark tells the story of surface naval combat at night from the Russo-Japanese War through World War II. The book is about the process of confronting and mastering problems brought on by technological change during war. It does this by examining seven periods focusing on the Imperial Russian Navy in 1904–1905, the Imperial German Navy from 1914–1918, the Royal Navy from 1916–1939, the Regia Marina from 1940–1943, the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1942, the US Navy in 1943–1944, and the Royal Navy and Royal Canadian Navy from 1943–1944.The chapters are written by authors hailing from Australia, Canada, Italy, and the United States, all recognized masters in their subject.

From the late nineteenth century until World War II, competing spheres of professional identity and practice redrew the field of history, establishing fundamental differences between the roles of university historians, archivists, staff at historical societies, history teachers, and others. In History’s Babel, Robert B. Townsend takes us from the beginning of this professional shift—when the work of history included not just original research, but also teaching and the gathering of historical materials—to a state of microprofessionalization that continues to define the field today. Drawing on extensive research among the records of the American Historical Association and a multitude of other sources, Townsend traces the slow fragmentation of the field from 1880 to the divisions of the 1940s manifest today in the diverse professions of academia, teaching, and public history. By revealing how the founders of the contemporary historical enterprise envisioned the future of the discipline, he offers insight into our own historical moment and the way the discipline has adapted and changed over time. Townsend’s work will be of interest not only to historians but to all who care about how the professions of history emerged, how they might go forward, and the public role they still can play.
