Sinopsis

A sleuthing Oxford professor hunts a village blackmailer, in a novel by an author who “combines a flawless plot, witty dialogue, and a touch of hilarity” (The New York Times).

In the sleepy English village of Sanford Angelorum, Oxford professor and amateur detective Gervase Fen is taking a break from his books to run for Parliament. At first glance, the village he's come to canvass appears perfectly peaceful, but Fen soon discovers that appearances can be deceiving: someone in the village has discovered a dark secret and is using it for blackmail. Anyone who comes close to uncovering the blackmailer's identity is swiftly dispatched.

As the joys of politics wear off, Fen sets his mind to the mystery—but finds himself caught up in a tangled tale of eccentric psychiatrists, escaped lunatics, beautiful women, and lost heirs . . .

“His books are full of high spirits and excellent jokes, with constant literary allusions . . . But at times the mood turns darker, and Crispin is capable of passages of both genuine suspense and ingenious deduction.” —The Daily Telegraph

“One of the most literate mystery writers of the twentieth century.” —Boston Globe

Their neighbor Adrienne's sister, visiting from New York City, is slumped on the porch, fatally stabbed. And with countless people traipsing around in costume, the killer might be as elusive as an apple in a bucket of water.

The victim was a charismatic college professor and fierce feminist, and soon the women are infiltrating her social and academic circles to collect clues. The grass is greener at Lush Meadows Golf and Country Club these days but that was not always the case. When Preston and Amy Meadows inherited the club, it was in shambles and so was their relationship. By happenstance, Amy discovers a solution that not only saved the club but her marriage as well. Under the guise of her foundation, Meadows Mission, Amy facilitated a program that lessened the homeless population, while simultaneously building up the club. Together, Amy and Preston reclaim their position in Atlanta’s high society as southern aristocracy.

But something isn’t right at the club and the answer is blowing in the wind.

Former police detective, Blayke Ladd, who now runs Off the Street Shelter, suspects Meadows Mission is engaging in unethical business practices the reason they report such a high success rate. However, he has witnessed the change in some of the clients that he referred to the program and cannot discount the organization’s legitimacy. But when a client asks for a recommendation to the program, he agrees reluctantly.

Jasmine Aster is not only a client of Blayke’s, but also a woman he has come to care about. After she is offered a lucrative position at the country club, he is filled with mixed emotions. All is well for the beautiful landscaping engineer until she befriends a woman who has damning information that can destroy the Meadowsempire in less time than it took to build it. The woman needs help and the only person Jasmine trusts enough to help her is, Blayke. While Jasmine and Blayke work hard to uncover the deception, Amy works vigilantly to conceal the truth.

The southern belle will do anything to maintain the lifestyle she was born into and save her life, even at the expense of someone else’s.
