Sinopsis

A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history’s most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors’ Legends of the Ancient World series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of antiquity’s most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.

Mark Antony (83-50 B.C.) is one of the most unique and best known figures of antiquity, a man whose relationships with some of history’s giants ensured his own legacy. A protégé of Julius Caesar’s, a lover of Cleopatra’s, a sworn enemy of Cicero’s, and a foil for Octavian, Antony has long been remembered for the role he played in others’ lives more than for his own accomplishments. Fittingly and ironically, Antony might be best remembered today for the words Shakespeare put in his mouth for Caesar’s eulogy.

While Antony’s relationships with Rome’s most famous leaders and history’s most famous woman were central components in his lives, the fact that his legacy has been intertwined with them belies the fact that he was a powerful man in his own right. Coming up as a capable and competent military man who Caesar trusted as his right hand, Antony parlayed that into governing Rome itself while Caesar fought Pompey. After Caesar’s assassination in 44 B.C., Antony deftly navigated from tenuous footing as a declared enemy of the state to become one of Rome’s two most powerful leaders, arguably its most powerful, in just a matter of years, outmaneuvering and getting the best of enemies like Brutus and Cicero. At the same time, Antony was notorious in his own time for his voracious appetite for vice, and the branding of him as a boor has persisted for over 2,000 years.

Of course, Antony’s relationship with Cleopatra has become the stuff of legends, and one of history’s most famous love stories, but even that was a byproduct of the fact that Antony ruled the eastern third of the Roman Empire as triumvir. Had Octavian and fate not caught up with him at the Battle of Actium, one of the most famous naval battles ever, history might have been very different.

Legends of the Ancient World: The Life and Legacy of Mark Antony provides an entertaining look at the facts and myths surrounding one of Rome’s most famous leaders and one of history’s most famous lovers. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about Antony like you never have before, in no time at all.

The autobiographical first novel by Etsu Inagaki Sugimoto, "A Daughter of the Samurai" tells the incredible true story of a young girl born into a high-status family in Nagaoka, Japan whose father, a samurai, is stripped of his power when the feudal system in Japan collapses and his family is thrown into turmoil and uncertainty. Originally destined to become a priestess, young Etsu is instead betrothed to a wealthy Japanese merchant in Cincinnati, Ohio and makes the unlikely and culturally jarring journey from the Japanese countryside to the American Midwest during the 1880's. Hailed by critics upon its original release, "A Daughter of the Samurai" is a fascinating, one-of-a-kind glimpse into a forgotten age. Etsu's insights, observations and descriptions of her life in Japan at this pivotal time in history - as well as her journey to America and back - is at once heartwarming, haunting and thrilling.

This program is read by the author.A lightning-strike dispatch of hilarious, intimate, luminous essays from the brain (and voice!) of Emmy Award-nominated actress and writer Betty Gilpin.Oh. Hi. *takes six long gulps of water during which you’re like, may I help you?*My name is Betty. I have depression. I have passion. I have tits the size of printers. And also: I have a brain full of women. There’s Blanche VonFuckery, Ingrid St. Rash, and a host of others—some cowering in sweatpants, some howling plans for revolution, and one, oh God, and one . . . slowly vomiting up a crow? Worried for her. These women take turns at the wheel. That’s why I feel like a million selves. With a raised eyebrow and a soul-scalpel, I’d like to tell you how I got this way. Because maybe you feel this way too.Let’s hop from wild dissections of modern womanhood to boarding school musings to the glossy cringe of Hollywood. Let’s laugh at my failures and then quietly hope with me for the dream. Whether that dream is love or liberation or enough IMDB credits to taze the demon snapping at my ankles, we won’t know until the shit-fanning end.As a dear friend said after listening to this audiobook, it’s “either a masterpiece, or it’s…completely…” and then she glazed over into a haunted stare. Listener? This audiobook is my opus and it is chaos. If you’ve ever felt like you were more, or at least weirder, than the world expected—welcome to All the Women in My Brain.A Macmillan Audio production from Flatiron Books

On the morning of November 4, 2019, a caravan of women and children was ambushed by masked gunmen on a desolate stretch of road in northern Mexico controlled by the Sinaloa drug cartel. Firing semi-automatic weapons, the attackers killed nine people and gravely injured five more. The victims were members of the LeBaron and La Mora communities—fundamentalist Mormons whose forebears broke from the LDS Church and settled in Mexico when their religion outlawed polygamy in the late nineteenth century. The massacre produced international headlines for weeks, and prompted President Donald Trump to threaten to send in the US Army.

In The Colony, Sally Denton delves into the complex story of the LeBaron clan. Their homestead—Colonia LeBaron—is a portal into the past, a place that offers a glimpse of life within a polygamous community on an arid and dangerous frontier in the mid-1800s, though with smartphones and machine guns. Rooting her narrative in written sources as well as interviews with anonymous women from LeBaron itself, Denton unfolds an epic, disturbing tale that spans the first polygamist emigrations to Mexico through the LeBarons' internal blood feud in the 1970s and up to the family's recent alliance with the NXIVM sex cult, whose now-imprisoned leader, Keith Raniere, may have based his practices on the society he witnessed in Colonia LeBaron.

Every year, more than a million women find themselves grappling with the devastating loss of a life partner—a loss that shatters their present and leaves their future in doubt. At 65, Margaret Mandell faces this heart-wrenching reality when she loses her husband of 45 years to a fast-moving disease. The bed is now half-empty, her body betrays her, and laughter seems elusive.
In the depths of longing and haunted by memories, Mandell embarks on a journey of healing through the written word. She begins to write letters to the man she loved in a poignant process of retracing their shared history. But when a tender-hearted college professor steps quietly into her life and listens attentively as Mandell reads her accumulating stack of letters out loud, her world is transformed in profound and unexpected ways.
And Always One More Time is a story that delves deep into the human experience, reminiscent of C.S. Lewis's A Grief Observed in its wisdom and Joyce Carol Oates's A Widow's Story in its suspense. It offers universal truths about love, loss, and resilience, much like Steve Leder's The Beauty of What Remains. With potent and swift-moving words, this book can be devoured in a single sitting. It is a beacon of hope for those navigating the aftermath of the greatest loss.

"A moving, insightful, and beautifully crafted story of losing one great love and finding another."
    -- Kirkus Reviews

"Margaret Mandell’s AND ALWAYS ONE MORE TIME is a warm, personable memoir of love, loss, and hope. With both its heartfelt epistolary style and friendly, clear reading reflecting the precise, embodied attention of the author’s lifelong yoga practice, Mandell’s text is a reminder that not only frailty and mortality, but also love, lust, and joy, are ever-present, natural components of the human condition."
