Sinopse

“You yellow dogs, you thought I'd never make it

home from the land of Troy. You took my house to plunder,

twisted my maids to serve your beds. You dared

bid for my wife while I was still alive.

Contempt was all you had for the gods who rule wide heaven,

contempt for what men say of you hereafter.

Your last hour has come. You die in blood.” - Odysseus, The Odyssey

Odysseus is without question one of the most fascinating figures in classical mythology. Indeed, despite being an ancillary character in the Iliad, he was so beloved by ancient audiences that he warranted his own spinoff, the Odyssey. He was endemic throughout Greek thought and art, appearing in statues, theatrical pieces, poems and orations, and he was equally prevalent in later Roman culture. Unlike other  notable figures of classical antiquity who were forgotten during the Middle Ages (including a fair few who, unlike Odysseus himself, actually existed outside the realm of legend) Odysseus’s fame endured, and he made regular appearances in Medieval and Renaissance literature, including a memorable turn in Dante’s Inferno. To this day, Odysseus remains a highly popular character, having appeared on both the big and small screen, featuring in a slew of novels, and even making appearances in Japanese anime and video games. Characters inspired by Odysseus and his adventures are a staple of modern fiction, and locations said to match those from the Odyssey are scattered throughout the Mediterranean, particularly in Greece and Italy.

The true root of Odysseus’s mass appeal is that he is a figure of startling complexity. Unlike other main characters in the Epic Cycle, Odysseus does not conform to any particular archetype. While Odysseus’s defining characteristic is clearly his intelligence – he was known to the Greeks almost universally as “Cunning Odysseus” – he is no mere schemer, as he was considered also one of the bravest and most renowned warriors to fight in the Trojan War. And though depicted as a hero, he is also capable of acts of breathtaking amorality. Compared to other Greek heroes such as Ajax (all brute strength and no guile), Menelaus (filled with notions of honor and wounded dignity), or even Achilles himself (thirsty for glory at the expense of all else), Odysseus presents a far more nuanced portrait. Reluctant hero, schemer, criminal, warrior, navigator, explorer, loving (yet frequently unfaithful) husband and father, Odysseus is all this and more. Although part of this complexity may derive from the fact that the original stories adapted by Homer into the Iliad and Odyssey featured two different characters (Odysseus and Ulysses respectively), the character which has reached readers today is unique and nuanced enough to have been labeled, with reason, the first modern literary hero.

Legends of the Ancient World: Odysseus chronicles the legend of Odysseus’s life, comprehensively covers his role in the Iliad and Odyssey, and analyzes the literary legacy Odysseus left. Along with pictures, a bibliography and Table of Contents, you will learn about Odysseus like you never have before, in no time at all.

The ultimate photographic collection of the most historic trees on the planet.
Uncover remarkable trees from around the world, many of which have borne witness to key moments in history or reached a scale and age that have allowed them to become a part of history themselves.
“[A] rich history … it contains some of the most extraordinary tales of trees through time” — The Sunday Post
First meet 'Methuselah’, a bristlecone pine in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, believed to be 4,900 years old. Learn about trees which have inspired great events, such as the Isaac Newton apple tree in Lincolnshire, where the famous scientist observed an apple falling from a tree (which still stands in the family garden). Other flora has withstood historic events such as in Japan, where the Hibaku jumoku still grows as a survivor tree from the Hiroshima bombing and the 9/11 Survivor Tree in New York City.
Many trees continue to inspire our world today including the long avenue of beech trees in Northern Ireland known as the Dark Hedges which Game of Thrones fans will instantly recognise as the road to Kings Landing, the Robin Hood’s oak in the Sherwood Forest or the J. R. R. Tolkien trees in Avebury, which inspired the Ents in The Lord of the Rings.
Rest a while beside the oldest trunks and witness the enthralling stories nestled within the branches of these gentle giants.

    My Great Education - Student...

My name is Laura, I am 19 years old. I’m a student and I prostitute myself to pay for my studies. I’m not alone in this. It seems that many other students are doing the same thing. It all followed a strange logic, without me really realizing that I was falling. I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I’ve never known luxury or ease, but until this year, I’ve never lacked for anything. My thirst for learning and my convictions always made me think that my student years would be the most beautiful, the most carefree. I never thought that my first year at university would turn into a real nightmare.
An unprecedented account of a contemporary phenomenon that has only become more pronounced with the prevalence of the Internet and cell phones. The Afterword includes a sociological perspective by Eva Clouet, author of the first survey on student prostitution in the age of new communication technologies, published at the same time by Max Milo.

What does it mean to be human? What is a person? Where did we come from?
Many answers have been offered throughout history in response to these perennial questions, including those from biological, anthropological, sociological, political, and theological approaches. And yet the questions remain.
Philosopher Joshua Rasmussen offers his own step-by-step examination into the fundamental nature and ultimate origin of persons. Using accessible language and clear logic, he argues that the answer to the question of what it means to be a person sheds light not only on our own nature but also on the existence of the one who gave us life.

The Theory of Evolution is a Joke

Danny Erhardt, a mild mannered reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper, has sought the truth, and fortuitously found it. You can too. If you seek it with all your heart. If you love the truth more than the opinions and conclusions that are already in your head. The lies of Satan ("the great deceiver who goes forth to deceive the whole world") cover this earth like a blanket, and people believe whatever they are taught. (Evolution is one of them...) What lies have you been taught? have you learned to hold dear? ...Danny is father to a half dozen boys and girls, and grandfather to a little more than half a dozen.
If you have any unintelligent criticisms or thoughtless attacks on the truth, to share, please send them to our Complaint Dept. Administrator, Mrs. Helen Waite. Go to her if you feel the need to vent any or all of the evolutionary indoctrinated lies that we were all fed, and that unfortunately too many still believe. Also, if anyone is offended by any, or all, of the accurate scientific truths and realities imparted here, then please bang your face against your bathroom mirror for about half an hour, and then hide under your mommy's bed for a couple of weeks. This should help.
Well, thank you so much for picking up a copy of this book, or considering doing the same. It's called the truth. And may God (you know, the actual Creator of all of this) richly bless you and yours.

This program is read by the author. In his forceful follow-up to Moneyland, Oliver Bullough unravels the dark secret of how Britain placed itself at the center of the global offshore economy and at the service of the worst people in the world. The Suez Crisis of 1956 was the nadir of Britain's twentieth century, the moment when the once-superpower was bullied into retreat. "Great Britain has lost an empire and not yet found a role," said Dean Acherson, a former US secretary of state. Acheson's line has entered into the canon of great quotations: but it was wrong. Britain had already found a role. The leaders of the world just hadn't noticed it yet.Butler to the World reveals how Britain came to assume its role as the center of the offshore economy. Written polemically, but studded with witty references to the butlers of popular fiction, it demonstrates how so many elements of modern Britain have been put at the service of the world's oligarchs. The Biden administration is putting corruption at the heart of its foreign policy, and that means it needs to confront Britain's role as the foremost enabler of financial crime and ill behavior. This audiobook lays bare how London has deliberately undercut U.S. regulations for decades, and calls into question the extent to which Britain can be considered a reliable ally.A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin's Press
