Summary

A man sells the love letters a famous dead novelist wrote him — anonymously, for the money to marry — and then must live inside the marriage the money bought. Wharton, the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, published this novella in 1900; it is the earliest statement of her permanent subject, which is not adultery or money but the small betrayal a decent person makes and then has to eat, daily, for years. Six decades of paintings, from Cassatt to Hammershøi, dwell on readers and letters, the quiet interiors where a private betrayal is read and reread.

A young man of a great Hudson valley family discovers he has a half-sister and destroys his own life acknowledging her. Melville wrote it straight after Moby-Dick, in fury at his reception; a reviewer's headline read Herman Melville Crazy, and his standing with the reading public never recovered. This edition binds 56 plates of painting with the text, among them Thomas Cole, Asher Brown Durand and Edward Mitchell Bannister, with subjects from View of Florence to Haymaking.

The Second Crusade: Eleanor of Aquitaine rides with her own army to the Holy Land, her husband the King of France cannot control her, and a young Englishman who loves her is caught between. Crawford lived above Sorrento and wrote more than forty books at a pace his publishers could not keep up with; the Eleanor here is drawn from the chronicles, and she is the most interesting person in the book by a distance. Forty-seven paintings from 1764 to 1890, including work by Edwin Hayes, turn on the same crusader castles and coastal waters that carry Eleanor's army to the Holy Land.
