Sinopse

This edition includes the following editor's introduction: Edith Wharton, the feminism of a Pulitzer Prize winner

Originally published in 1925, "The Mother’s Recompense" is one of the last novels by the American writer Edith Wharton.

Opening on the French Riviera among a motley community of American expatriates, "The Mother's Recompense" tells the story of Kate Clephane and her reluctant return to New York society after being exiled years before for abandoning her husband and infant daughter. Curiously, Kate has been summoned back by that same daughter, Anne, now fully grown and intent on marrying Chris Fenno, a war hero, dilettante, and social opportunist. Chris's questionable intentions toward her daughter are, however, the least of Kate's worries since she was once, and still is, deeply in love with him.

Kate's moral quandary and the ensuing drama evoke comparison with “Oedipus” and “Hamlet” and lead to an ending that startled the mores of the day.

A mountain town that's not on any map, a messy bookstore with infinite doors, and a spoiled prince under a forgetful wizard's curse . . . this school break might hold more than Lina bargained for!

Lina's father had suggested she go "someplace different" for the summer, and she's beginning to wish she hadn't listened. She could be at her grandma's house in Nagano now, instead of trudging through a forest in search of a town that might not even exist. But when a gust of wind carries off her umbrella, it leads Lina down a secret path between the trees to a strange and incredible world. In the hidden village of Misty Valley, centaurs roam the cobblestone streets and gnomes visit shops stuffed with spellbooks and enchanted desserts. All magic has a dark side, though, and sometimes even sorcerers need a human's helping hand.

Now, fifty years after its debut and decades of blockbuster success in Japan, Sachiko Kashiwaba's acclaimed novel is available in English and certain to delight listeners of all ages.
