Sinopse

In "The Magic City," Edith Nesbit ingeniously weaves a tale of fantasy and adventure that explores the boundless landscapes of imagination and childhood. The story follows the protagonist, Philip, who, devastated by his sister's departure, constructs a fantastical city from sand and dreams, embodying the rich traditions of children's literature during the Edwardian era. Nesbit's literary style is characterized by her vivid descriptions, playful tone, and a seamless blend of realism and fantasy, reflecting the thematic concerns of her time, particularly the challenges of grief, sibling relationships, and the powerful role of imagination. The inclusion of enchanting illustrations enhances the fantastical elements of the narrative, making it an engaging experience for readers of all ages. Edith Nesbit (1858-1924) was a pioneering English author known for her significant contributions to children's literature, often drawing from her own experiences and the political landscape of her era. Growing up in a family that valued storytelling and imagination, Nesbit's formative years, marked by both joy and hardship, undoubtedly influenced her characterization of resilient young protagonists. Her various political and social interests, particularly in socialist movements, also colored her narratives, making her works rich in both imagination and sociopolitical context. "The Magic City" is highly recommended for readers who seek a poignant exploration of childhood fantasies and the resilience of the human spirit. Suitable for both young readers and adults who cherish the whimsicality of imagination, the book invites one to discover the transformative power of creativity. Nesbit's narrative not only entertains but also resonates emotionally, compelling readers to reflect on the significance of dreams and the solace they provide amidst life's challenges.

Alien Equivalent by Richard R. Smith - Martians were weak, sensitive, a dying race, frail and impotent before the superiority of master Earthmen. Only in the sly and mentally skillful game of Duchal might sons of the red planet emerge gloriously from their shells.
Chester Farrell emerged from the narrow alley and paused before the barbed wire fence.
Behind him, the Martian city was a maze of strange sounds, angular buildings, acrid odors and dark shadows.
Before him, beyond the fence, three spaceships pointed their bows toward a star-studded sky. The slender ships gleamed dully in the starlight as they rested on the red desert.
He touched the money in his pocket to reassure himself that at last, he had the fare for the trip to Earth.
His eyes scanned the heavens, searched for the bright light that was Earth.
Earth! In itself, the planet meant little to him. The seas, mountains, valleys and forests did not cause the burning desire inside him.
He closed his eyes and remembered a brick house in Cleveland and the brown-haired woman and chubby boy who lived there. He recalled slender, soft fingers that touched him gently and a small form that waddled uncertainly across their living room floor.
Three years ago, he had left Louise and Sammy on Earth. He had come to Mars to make a small fortune.
The dream had not materialized: the Mars Mining Corporation didn't want to pay their employees good salaries although the ores transported to Earth sold for tremendous profits. They paid their employees as little as possible.
It was simple: Governments wanted colonists on Mars to exploit the planet. Mars Mining wanted colonists to remain and operate their mines. The two groups, political and business, collaborated.

The Maze divides up the land, isolating communities and loved ones, and hated ones. On the Outside, the League of Monasteries rules supreme. On the Inside, the Kingdom rules in ignorance of its own isolation, free of all Gods. At its centre, the Village struggles to survive.
This is a story of confusion, conflict, deception and double-crossing between members of a dysfunctional Royal Family. It is also the story of a despotic Chief Monk, and the story of an orphaned village girl wishing for a better life. By the end the emotional complexity, hurt and betrayals overwhelms all.
