This gripping narrative blends elements of mystery and adventure, all characterized by Wallace's distinctive prose style, which deftly balances suspense and vivid characterization. Five months after the end of the Civil War, Acting Navy Lieutenant Everett Townsend is awaiting discharge in Key West. The end of the war has left him uncertain about his future and full of regret about the end of his relationship with Emma, the Cuban American daughter of a Havana boarding house owner. His Spanish grandmother—a slave owner who runs a prosperous sugar plantation in the Cuban countryside—is dreaming that Everett will return and take over the family business, a prospect that sickens him.

Returning from a routine supply mission from Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas, he and his men are caught in a hurricane and witness a shipwreck in the Marquesas Keys. When they investigate, they discover a locked cargo hold with the dead bodies of Black freedmen. When Townsend reports this unsettling incident to his distracted Naval commander in Key West, he's encouraged to drop the matter. But he can't shake his suspicions that the poor souls from the cargo hold were destined for re-enslavement in the sugar fields of Spanish Cuba.

The murder of an American sailor in a Cuban port provides Townsend with a reason to return to Cuba and continue his investigation. A rescue of a Navy veteran leads to more clues and helps convince Townsend to become a government informant operating in the interior of Cuba.

Hatherley was told to keep the job confidential, and was transported to the job in a carriage with frosted glass, to keep the location secret. He was shown the press, but on closer inspection discovered a "crust of metallic deposit" on the press, and he suspected it was not being used for compressing earth. He confronted his employer, who attacked him, and during his escape his thumb is chopped off. Holmes deduces that the press is being used to produce counterfeit coins, and works out its location. However, when they arrive, the house is on fire, and the criminals have escaped.

One of the most influential works of Russian literature and a classic of world literature, Crime and Punishment follows the great moral dilemmas of one St. Petersburg man who makes a case to justify murder.Rodion Raskolnikov is impoverished and desperate, and he thinks himself to be above the laws of society. He decides it’s just for him to kill an old woman because, with the money he’ll steal from her, he can go on to perform great deeds. But, of course, his logic falls apart quickly, and guilt comes to swallow him whole. Sharp and suspenseful, this story of Raskolnikov’s dance with a police investigator and redemption by a sex worker is a philosophical novel for the ages. The Encyclopedia Britannica calls it “one of the finest studies of the psychopathology of guilt written in any language.” Crime and Punishment remains as relevant to discussions of power and responsibility in the 21st century as it was in the 19th.
