Francis Bret Harte was born on 25th August 1836 in Albany New York.

As a young boy Harte developed an early love of books and reading. He first published at the tender age of 11, his satirical poem ‘Autumn Musings’. Expecting praise he received anything but and later wrote "Such a shock was their ridicule to me that I wonder that I ever wrote another line of verse."

By age 13 his formal education was at an end and four years later the family moved to California. Here the young man worked in a variety of capacities; miner, teacher, messenger, and journalist.

But it was also here that he found the stories and inspiration for the works that would seal his fame across the literary world. He was instrumental in propelling the short story genre forward and brought tales of the Old West and the Gold Rush to a greater audience. At the height of his fame he would entertain staggering monetary offers to write for monthly magazines.

His talents extended to poetry, plays, lectures, book reviews, editorials, and magazine sketches. As he moved location, initially east to New York and then through Consular appointments to Europe and finally England his audience diminished but he continued to experiment, to write and to publish.

Bret Harte died of throat cancer on May 5th 1902 and is buried in St Peter’s Church in Frimley, Surrey, England.

🌀 Hand-spinner and fiber artist Spinny Beck is hosting her monthly spinning circle when the circle's most competitive member—a notorious fiber hoarder—is found dead in her studio, tangled in a massive pile of yarn spun from her own antique spinning wheel. The police suspect a bizarre accident, but Spinny notices the wheel's drive band has been deliberately frayed and the victim's fiber stash contains rare breeds that don't match her purchase records. With her spinning circle shattered by suspicion and her studio temporarily closed, Spinny must draft her way through the investigation. Assisted by her loyal spinning friends and the handsome sheep farmer tracking missing rare breeds, Spinny uncovers a scheme involving stolen fleeces, counterfeit exotic fibers, and a black market for heritage breed wool. From suspicious twist angles that reveal multiple spinners to fiber preparations that don't match the victim's technique, every spun yard tells a story. But when Spinny discovers the victim was systematically acquiring—through questionable means—every rare fleece in the region to control the luxury fiber market, she realizes the killer is protecting a farming legacy more precious than any hand-spun yarn. With the annual fiber festival approaching and the real culprit still spinning lies, Spinny must ply together the truth before her own story gets permanently wound up.

EVIL IS NOT UGLY. IT IS BEAUTIFUL AND SEDUCTIVE, WHICH IS WHY WE ARE DRAWN TO IT.
Most of the world worships the fallen god, Malasephus, who promises power to the ambitious, wealth to the greedy, pleasure to the hedonist, revenge to the vengeful, and to all, eternal youth and beauty. These gifts are bestowed by the Beckoning, but they come with a price. For the Beckoning twists the mind and soul, until they are willing to do whatever it takes to obtain their desires.
But not all men worship the fallen god. In the lands east of the Dohminar mountains, men still follow the Virtues. Protected by powerful runes, they are hunted by the Malasephus's creatures, the nohetka and feral. When everyone he knows is brutally murdered, Jan swears an oath of vengeance, and the Beckoning responds.
Feeding his hate and anger, it shapes and twists him into a creature driven by vengeance. As he sheds more and more innocent blood in his quest to avenge his family, Jan must decide what matters more to him, vengeance, or his humanity.
