Sinopsis

This issue, we have a pair of Golden Age novels—one mystery, one fantasy—from two of the greats, Edgar Wallace (who created King Kong, among other things) and H. de Vere Stacpoole (author of The Blue Lagoon). But the short stories are no slouches, either: tales by modern greats like Robert Lopresti and Joseph S. Walker (thanks to Acquiring Editors Michael Bracken and Barb Goffman), and Ron Miller, alongside newcomers like KB Willson and Sarah EA Hart. Plus we have classics by John S. Glasby, E.C. Tubb, and space opera from Edmond Hamilton. And, of course, a solve-it-yourself mystery from Hal Charles. Fun stuff!

From the Southern Book Prize–winning author of Rednecks: a thrilling novel of pursuit, survival, and redemption between two species in the American Southwest

Broke, dispossessed, and angry at the government after losing his family’s New Mexico ranch, Trace Temple is looking for revenge. He’s living out of his truck when a shadowy militia movement hires him to take down the legendary she-wolf of the Dark Canyon pack, One-Eleven. But One-Eleven is no ordinary wolf. Cunning, fiercely protective of her young, and seasoned in the ways of men, she leads her pack deep into the forbidding desert peaks and canyons, always one step ahead of pursuit.

After a harrowing brush with death in the backcountry, Trace has a change of heart—only to be replaced by a professional hunter and assassin named Murdoch, who ruthlessly pursues his animal quarry while stalking Trace himself.

To survive, Trace must join forces with a pair of unlikely allies: a survivalist animal protector who deploys feral senses and deep wilderness skills to protect the wolves, and Imogen Cruz, a local rancher, childhood friend, and unrequited love of Trace’s early years. Together, they must fight to protect not only themselves and the Dark Canyon pack, but ultimately, the Gila Wilderness itself—the world’s first designated wilderness area.

In Wolvers, award-winning author Taylor Brown presents a suspenseful, thrillingly written tale set at the burning edge of today’s Southwest, where once-extinct wolves have returned, the land is tinder-dry and fragile, and desperate men seek to reclaim what they believe is theirs to rule.

Remodelling Murder is a locked room mystery set in an English country mansion.
The novel introduces Detective Inspector Pat Hound, a fifty-something sleuth with a dry wit, and blends classic Golden Age puzzle elements with Japanese superstition and a modern, cosy tone aimed at fans of Richard Osman, Bob Mortimer, Lucy Foley, and Knives Out.
When renovation workers from Yukiko Curiosity Design uncover a body in a locked bedroom at Sibson Hall, a recently purchased estate outside Royal Tunbridge Wells, the scene looks like suicide — except for a handful of odd details that refuse to fit. The victim clutches a wooden mallet, there's no key to the locked door, and questions about ghosts and yakuza ties ripple through the household.
DI Pat Hound, called away from her favourite coffee spot and less than thrilled at mixing menopause symptoms with crime-scene coveralls, senses there is more to the scene than meets
    the eye.
Remodelling Murder leans into the pleasure of puzzle fiction rather than the grind of police procedural work. With a narrative voice that nods to Magpie Murders and The Thursday Murder Club, Scanlan-Dyas crafts a cast of eccentric characters, sly red herrings, and a closed-circle mystery that honours the locked-room tradition of John Dickson Carr while introducing a fresh cross-cultural angle.
Scanlan-Dyas's fifteen years living in Japan and his British upbringing lend authentic texture to the story: the plot threads in local superstition, subtle paranormal hints, and the cultural disquiet that follows a Japanese family with alleged yakuza connections moving into an English manor.
Remodelling Murder is the first in a planned series featuring DI Pat Hound, with a follow-up due in 2027. Readers who enjoy a tightly plotted story with intricate clues, a strong central detective, and a mysterious setting will find this a satisfying listen.
