Sinopsis

In "The Complete Essays, Literary Studies, Criticism, Cryptography & Autography," Edgar Allan Poe showcases his multifaceted genius as a writer, critic, and theorist. This collection brings together a diverse array of essays that span the realms of literary critique, aesthetic philosophy, and the burgeoning fields of cryptography and autography. Poe's literary style is marked by its precision, depth, and often macabre undertones, reflecting the complexities of the human experience and the intricacies of the written word. His critical essays not only dissect contemporary literary works but also formulate theories that would later influence modern literary criticism, bridging the romantic and gothic traditions of his era with emerging American literary identities. Poe, often regarded as the father of the modern short story and a pioneer of detective fiction, drew from his tumultuous personal life and sharp intellect to create a body of work that interrogates the very nature of art and authorship. His experiences with tragedy, loss, and mental anguish imbue his essays with a profound psychological insight, allowing readers to glimpse the mind of a writer grappling with the burdens of creativity and societal expectations. This compelling collection is a must-read for scholars, aspiring writers, and literature enthusiasts alike. It offers invaluable insights into Poe's literary philosophy and serves as a testament to his enduring influence on American literature. By delving into this volume, readers will not only appreciate the nuances of Poe's thought but also gain a deeper understanding of the literary culture of the 19th century.

“Gavin at War provides a lively self-portrait. His diary is especially notable for its skeptical assessments of his comrades and his Army.” — The New York TimesWinner, 2022 Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Awards, Journals, Memoirs, and Letters"General Gavin was a very brave man who had great faith in his men. The battle or the weather never stopped him from going to check the troops. He would go in the rain or snow. If the battle was severe, he would crawl from foxhole to foxhole to talk to his men to let them know he was with them. Words cannot explain the love and pride I had for General Gavin."—Walter Woods, World War II aide to General Gavin Lieutenant General James Gavin, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division during WWII, is one of the best-known figures of the war. Beginning as the commander of the 505th Parachute Combat Team that spearheaded the American assault on Sicily in July 1943, Gavin advanced to division command and finally command of US forces in Berlin. Throughout this time he kept a wartime diary that starts in April 1943, as the unit was preparing to go to northern Africa, and continues through to his final entry on 1 September 1945 during the occupation of Berlin. During the war years, Gavin came into close contact with virtually all the leading airborne commanders and many others who would advance to the top levels of Army leadership. His diary includes observations on fellow military and political leaders such as General Dwight Eisenhower and the British Field Marshal Montgomery, army operations, and the general's personal life. Gavin was an officer who led by example: on four combat jumps—into Sicily, at Salerno, then Normandy and the Netherlands—he was the first man out the door. Two Distinguished Service Crosses, two Silver Stars, and the Purple Heart rewarded his service. For decades, Gavin kept the existence of the journal a secret; the general's family discovered it among his belongings after his death. Editor Lewis "Bob" Sorley has worked closely with the Gavin family and the Army Heritage Center to prepare the diary for publication. His edited and annotated version includes a prologue and epilogue to frame the entries within the wider scope of the general's life.

Hume - A Very Short Introduction

David Hume, philosopher, historian, economist, librarian, and essayist, was one of the great figures of the European Enlightenment. Unlike some of his famous contemporaries, however, he was not dogmatically committed to idealized conceptions of reason, liberty, and progress. Instead, Hume was a skeptic whose arguments questioned the reach and authority of human rationality, and who put the rivalrous passions of commercial life at the center of his theory of human nature. He believed that the modern world was in many ways superior to the ancient world, but was acutely conscious of the threats to peace and progress posed by bigotry, factionalism, and imperialism. Today Hume's works continue to speak to us powerfully in an age of instability and uncertainty.

This Very Short Introduction presents a balanced account of Hume's thought, giving equal attention to his work on human nature, morality, politics, and religion. Weaving together biography, the historical context, and a thoughtful exposition of Hume's arguments, James A. Harris offers a compelling picture of a thinker who had no disciples and formed no school, but whom no one in his own time was able to ignore, and who has since become central to modern philosophy's understanding of itself.
