Fred Cox, a young soldier in the East Surrey Regiment, was taken prisoner by the Japanese at the fall of Singapore in February 1942. The next three and a half years were spent in a series of PoW camps, notably in Thailand working on the aptly named Death Railway. Fortunately he was not one of the 12,000 Allied prisoners who perished as a result of extreme maltreatment, starvation or disease, but his health, both physical and psychological, was seriously affected. After liberation, whilst in hospital in Ceylon, Fred was nursed by Joan whom he married. Advised by the doctors to face his horrific experiences, he and Joan spent the winter of 1946 1947 getting his story down on paper. Seventy years on, sadly after his death, Faith, Hope and Rice, (which were what sustained Fred through his ordeal) can now be shared with a wider audience. Readers cannot fail to be moved by the author's and his comrades' inspiring courage and resilience in the face of extreme adversity and ever present death.

As probably the world's most experienced long distance walker who also writes, Chris Townsend has many stories to tell and many photographs with which to illustrate them. Of all his adventures, those he enjoyed on America's Pacific Crest Trail in the 80s are among his favourites. The Pacific Crest Trail runs 2,600 miles from Mexico to Canada through desert, forest and mountain wildernesses. In Rattlesnakes and Bald Eagles Chris recounts not only his own six-month walk but also the longer story of the Trail itself, sharing his ideas and reflections on how the trail is developing, its future and consequent challenges.

Tubby Vielle briefly mentions his schooldays, falling in love with his future wife when he was 15 years old and the effect the Great Depression and fear of starvation in 1931 had on his future. He describes his flying training at the RAF College, Cranwell, his experience as a fighter pilot at Biggin Hill in 1934 and his two years as a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm at the time of the Abyssinian war. He explains his several narrow escapes from being killed – due to his amazingly good luck which was repeated many times during his career. He details the trick by which he escaped from the Fleet Air Arm and his delight at then being given one of the top flying jobs in the RAF.
He explains the overriding problem that faced all aircrew (except fighters controlled from the ground) of knowing where they were and how to fly accurately to where they intended. His posting to the Special Duties List, first at RAE Farnborough and later (at US request) based in Washington, DC, was to help direct the scientists trying to solve that problem.
He mentions the part he later played (as Head of Plans, Middle East) in the negotiations of the Anglo Egyptian Treaty, and his friendship with President Nasser. He describes how he found the solution to, and reduced the likelihood of further, fatal crashes of pilots flying the Canberra and, on his first supersonic flight in a fighter, solved the problem of some fatal crashes by high flying aircraft.
His experiences after leaving the RAF cover an even wider field of interesting events.
