Jacobs, his detective stories with Conan Doyle, his politico-science fiction with H. G. Wells, and his supernatural stories with Algernon Blackwood. In his stories of detection, Bramah hit on the idea of a blind detective, Max Carrados, whose triumphs are all the more amazing because of his disability. This collection features five of Max Carrados's most puzzling cases: "The Curious Circumstances of the Two Left Shoes", "The Game Played in the Dark", "The Last Exploit of Harry the Actor", "The Comedy at Fountain Cottage", and "Who Killed Charlie Winpole?"

Herbert West—Reanimator is a story by American horror fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft that was first serialized in February through July 1922 in the amateur publication Home Brew. The story was the basis of the 1985 horror film Re-Animator and its sequels, in addition to numerous other adaptations in various media. You want zombies? listen to this because Lovecraft was one of the very first and he got zombies right: scary, evil, implacable and out to get you. (Summary by Phil Chenevert )

Just our luck! Gus Lafee finished wiping his hands and sullenly threw the towel upon the rocks. His attitude was one of deep dejection. The light seemed gone out of the day and the glory from the golden sun. Even the keen mountain air was devoid of relish, and the early morning no longer yielded its customary zest. "Just our luck!" Gus repeated, this time avowedly for the edification of another young fellow who was busily engaged in sousing his head in the water of the lake. "What are you grumbling about, anyway?" Hazard Van Dorn lifted a soap-rimmed face questioningly. His eyes were shut. "What's our luck?" "Look there!" Gus threw a moody glance skyward. "Some duffer's got ahead of us. We've been scooped, that's all

1)Daen: Hamid is perplexed by the interference in his household, while his mother in law wonders about the “witch” (daen) who is destroying her daughter’s home. 2)Kallu (version 2): Kallu / Kaleemuddin returns as Deputy Collector to the family that mistreated him in his childhood. 3) Kallu ki Maa: Connected to the story Kallu, this narrative focuses on his mother and her life journey after the death of her husband. Introduction to the Kallu Stories: It is noted in the anthology of Ismat stories that Ismat Chughtai wrote two versions of the same story, Kallu. After writing the first version, she presented it to a peer for a review. Both she and her peer forgot about this exchange. Perhaps she was preoccupied with the characters and plot, as she proceeded to write the Kallu narrative yet again. There are slight shifts in the approach, although the characters remain the same. Both texts are now printed under the same title, with their respective version number.

These short stories from the award-winning South African author “combine the coolly interrogative gaze of the outsider with an insider’s intimate warmth” (J. M. Coetzee).   Zoë Wicomb’s debut short story collection, You Can’t Get Lost in Cape Town, won critical acclaim across the globe as well as high praise from fellow authors including Toni Morrison, J. M. Coetzee, Bharati Mukherjee, and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak. Now, after two novels, Wicomb returns to the genre that first brought her international acclaim.   Set mostly in the South African city of Cape Town, where Wicomb is from, and the Scottish city of Glasgow, where she now lives, this new collection of short stories straddles two worlds. With an array of expertly drawn characters, these twelve tales explore a range of human relationships: marriage, friendship, family, and the fraught yet often intimate relations between those who serve and those who are served.   Full of ironic twists, ambiguities, and moments of startling insight, The One That Got Away showcases this Windham Campbell Award–winning author at the height of her powers.   “An extraordinary writer . . . seductive, brilliant, and precious, her talent glitters.” —Toni Morrison
