Published in 1866, "The Dead Letter: An American Romance" written by Metta Victoria Fuller Victor under the pseudonym, Seeley Regester, is credited by historians of popular literature to be the first full-length American crime fiction novel. The writing is melodramatic in places and includes opinions typical of the time period, but is an enjoyable, early example of the genre. The novel begins with Richard Redfield, a clerk in the "Dead Letter Office," opening an unclaimed letter. Upon reading the contents, he is convinced that the message relates to the events of a night two years prior when another young man was brutally murdered. (summary by J. M. Smallheer)

"My imagination is always skulking about in a wrong place." And now Doyle Redmond, thirty-five-year-old nowhere writer, has crossed the line between imagination and real live trouble. On the lam in his soon-to-be ex-wife's Volvo, he's running a family errand back in his boyhood home of West Table, Missouri -- the heart of the red-dirt Ozarks. The law wants his big brother, Smoke, on a felony warrant, and Doyle's supposed to talk him into giving up. But Smoke is hunkered down in the hills with his partner, Big Annie, and her nineteen-year-old daughter, Niagra, making other plans: they're about to harvest a profitable patch of homegrown marijuana. Doyle takes just one look at Niagra's flattering red boots before joining his brother's scheme. Of course it means dealing with the law and maybe worse -- the Dollys. A legendary clan of largely criminal persuasion, the Dollys have been feuding with the Redmonds for generations. Now they want a piece of Smoke's cash crop, even if it means killing to get it. Doyle is fast realizing that yes, you can always put the country back in the boy...but sometimes that's not smart.

Jim Thompson's classic The Grifters is one of the best novels ever written about the art of the con, an ingeniously crafted story of deception and betrayal that was the basis for the critically acclaimed film by Stephen Frears and Martin Scorcese. To his friends, to his coworkers, and even to his mistress Moira, Roy Dillon is an honest hardworking salesman. He lives in a cheap hotel just within his pay bracket. He goes to work every day. He has hundreds of friends and associates who could attest to his good character.Yet, hidden behind three gaudy clown paintings in Roy's pallid hotel room, sits fifty-two thousand dollars — the money Roy makes from his short cons, his "grifting." For years, Roy has effortlessly maintained control over his house-of-cards life — until the simplest con goes wrong, and he finds himself critically injured and at the mercy of the most dangerous woman he ever met: his own mother.

Webb Wilder, Last of the Full Grown Men has its quizzical storylines set in a Neo Noir city. The characters have a sense of humor along with tons of insider Pop Culture references. As a series, WWLOTFGM is faithful to the hard-boiled detective / Film Noir visions of the 1940s and 1950s but set in the Pop Culture world of today. Webb Wilder, as a detective, is a semi-urban hero dealing with characters who are bigger than life and twice as preposterous. Webb gets dragged, suckered, or voluntarily dives into situations that seem impossible at first, but logic and luck win out in the end. With all of this intrigue and dark images, Webb Wilder, Last of the Full Grown Men can also be very funny. Consider if Raymond Chandler had written Philip Marlowe for a hybrid of Andy Griffith, Stephen Colbert and Humphrey Bogart.
"Mole Men" • Just another case of money, murder and madness, featuring a cropduster, Mole Men, a worm ranch and a blonde named Ruby Falls. As Webb tries to solve two cases with the same nightmare, he investigates St. Vegas county's largest fire ant hill, has to keep calm under a sultry beauty's “helping hands” and tries to figure out how to eat a worm burger and still be polite.
