Sinopse

Giving My All captures the journey of Earl Martin Phalen as he navigates family, self-identity and purpose. As a black boy adopted into a large, loving Irish Catholic family at age two, Earl discovered at a young age that he was meant to stand out. Yet whether it was on the basketball court or early in his career as a young and ambitious “edupreneur,” Earl encountered opportunities that required him to give his all, but often found himself holding back. Earl faced both subtle and overt racism in his predominantly white neighborhoods, but with the love and unrelenting support of his family, he was able to overcome much—facing it most directly and intentionally for the first time when he arrived on Yale campus as a young athlete scholar. While at Yale, Earl gained a new sense of pride and purpose as he connected with his black and African American heritage. This would continue throughout his studies and into graduate school at Harvard Law, where his calling to education—particularly that of black and brown children—came to life. Earl has dedicated his life to improving the access poor, black and brown children have to quality education and opportunities.

‘Dickens’s Favourite Blacking Factory’ is the extraordinary story of Charles Day, a self-made nineteenth-century boot-blacking entrepreneur, the dispute over whose Will led Charles Dickens to create the apparently endless case of ‘Jarndyce and Jarndyce’ in his novel ‘Bleak House’. In this remarkable and highly imaginative telling of a true story, after a decades-long search for information on his ancestor, the author makes a fluke discovery, revealing a sweeping story of Regency and early-Victorian London. An actual 170,000-word document uncovered in the National Archives exposes the tragic last two months of the life of Charles Day. This includes his deteriorating mental faculties resulting from tertiary syphilis, his remarkable philanthropy, blackmail by a dodgy solicitor, the inertia of the contemporary legal system and the shame of illegitimacy, particularly in the wealthy classes. Perhaps the plot of Dickens’s ‘Bleak House’ even reflects aspects of Charles Day’s own life?

In 1933, in the shadow of the Great Depression, Dorothy Day started the most prominent Catholic radical movement in United States history, the Catholic Worker Movement, a storied organization with a lasting legacy of truth and justice.

Day's newspaper, houses of hospitality, and ministry of paying attention to the inequality of her world would eventually become world famous, just as she would become a figure of promise for the poor. The ways in which Day and her fellow workers both found the love of God in and expressed it for their neighbors during a time of great social, political, economic, and spiritual upheaval would become a model of activism for decades to come.

In Unruly Saint, activist, writer, and neighbor D. L. Mayfield brings a personal lens to Day's story. In exploring the founding of the Catholic Worker movement and newspaper by revisiting the early years of Day's life, Mayfield turns her attention to what it means to be a good neighbor today. Through a combination of biography, observations on the current American landscape, and theological reflection, this is at once an achingly relevant account and an encouraging blueprint for people of faith in tumultuous times. It will resonate with today's activists, social justice warriors, and those seeking to live in the service of others.
