Sinossi

This edition includes the following editor's analysis: Can Arthur J. Raffles be compared to Sherlock Holmes?

Originally published in 1905, “A Thief in the Night” is a short story collection and E. W. Hornung's third instalment in the irresistible adventures of A. J. Raffles, the thief who gives crime a good name.

With the humorous and reflective narration of Bunny, Raffles' most faithful companion, “A Thief in the Night” is an exciting and fun collection of the adventures of the two famous thieves. With stories scattered across the timeline of Raffles' and Bunny's relationship, this collection of short fiction allows readers to fill in gaps and become better acquainted with the beloved main characters of E.W Hornung's popular crime series.

Arthur J. Raffles appears in three other works (two short story collections and one novel, all published by ePembaBooks) by E. W. Hornung:

“The Amateur Cracksman” (1899, 8 short stories)
“The Black Mask” (1901, 8 short stories)
	“Mr. Justice Raffles” (1909, novel)

"In this madly original debut, Ms. Harrison speaks up in a fresh, animated voice to say something worth saying about the festering animosities of small minds cooped up in small towns." —The New York Times Book Review

Blue Deer, Montana, may seem like a tranquil town nestled at the foot of the Crazy Mountains, but an influx of writers, artists, and actors has driven its inhabitants a little nuts. When someone uses a rifle on George Blackwater as he's working on his new screenplay, Sheriff Jules Clement figures the culprit is George's angry wife, Mona, who has been on the rampage since George's latest batch of affairs. But soon the number of killings multiplies, and Jules is surrounded by a variety of suspects, including George himself, still unhinged by something that happened twenty years ago. As Jules reluctantly digs into the seamy side of his hometown, he finds himself swamped by bad dreams, bad press, and an increasing distaste for his job.

A favorite destination—even for New Yorkers—is the venerable Metropolitan Museum of Art. On this particular day, “the Met,” as generally known, experiences an unusually large number of visitors. Visitors have their choice of viewing over two million works of art spanning five millennia of cultures worldwide. But some among them are up to something more sinister.

At one point, the Met’s surveillance cameras’ lenses capture “a mysterious-looking couple” amid the many visitors strolling about the many galleries. The pair is dripping wet in their matching taupe Burberry trench coats. Just as the two of them walk past Soleil dans le Ciel de Saint-Paul,
a masterpiece of Marc Chagall, a large tourist group—who, oddly enough, all are wearing distinctive red-and-white-striped vinyl raincoats—converges around them. But it is what happens next that baffles the museum’s surveillance crew. After “the mysterious-looking couple” pulls off their prank, they and the large tourist group walk out of that particular camera’s range, becoming submerged elsewhere in the interminable galleries of the gigantic museum.

But when a docent notices “something strange” with Chagall’s Soleil dans le Ciel de Saint-Paul,
in short order, the museum-goers inside the Chagall gallery hear “High Alert!” and watch in horror as a heavy metal grille drops down from the ceiling to the floor, effectively locking them inside the gallery.

And thus began what later came to be called The Mysterious Affair at the Met.
