What happens when a journey into the geographic unknown becomes a voyage into the darkest depths of the human soul?

Join Marlow, a riverboat captain, as he navigates the dense, oppressive heart of the African Congo on a mission to find the enigmatic and powerful Mr. Kurtz—a brilliant ivory agent who has devolved into a terrifying, god-like figure among the native people. Joseph Conrad's chilling novella is a searing critique of colonial greed, disguised as a suspenseful psychological thriller. Feel the mounting tension and unease as Marlow uncovers the horrors of exploitation and confronts the moral decay that consumes both the 'savage' and the 'civilized' man. This is a masterful, haunting exploration of madness, imperialism, and the thin line between moral righteousness and primal barbarism.

Considered a seminal work of 20th-century literature and the inspiration for countless stories of moral decay (including Apocalypse Now), Heart of Darkness is an essential read for anyone seeking powerful, complex, and enduring fiction.

"Antigone" is a Greek tragedy written by Sophocles in the 5th century BCE. The play is part of a trilogy, but only "Antigone," the third installment, has survived. The narrative revolves around Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus, who defies the king's decree and buries her brother Polynices, in defiance of the law. The king, Creon, orders that Polynices' body should remain unburied as punishment for his rebellion against the city.

Antigone's act of burial is not only an expression of familial loyalty but also an assertion of divine laws over human laws. She believes in the moral duty to honor her brother, even in death and is willing to face the consequences. Creon, however, sees her actions as an affront to his authority and issues a decree that anyone attempting to bury Polynices will be put to death.

As the plot unfolds, the clash between divine and human laws intensifies. Antigone is caught and brought before Creon, where she staunchly defends her actions. Creon remains resolute in his decision to punish her, regardless of her familial ties. The play explores themes of morality, duty, and the consequences of pride and authoritarian rule.

Tragedy unfolds as Antigone is sentenced to be entombed alive. The narrative weaves the fates of various characters, including Antigone, Haemon (Creon's son and Antigone's fiancé), and Eurydice (Creon's wife). The play culminates in a series of tragic events, leading to Creon's realization of his own tragic flaw and the devastating consequences of his decisions.

A Greek millionaire with a taste for cruelty is found shot in a locked room; the man who threatened to kill him has an alibi, and the only oddity is a candle burnt strangely. Wallace was illegitimate, raised by a Billingsgate fish porter and out of school at twelve; at his height a quarter of all books borrowed in England were his, and this is one of the cleanest locked-room tricks he built. Sixty plates of moonlit streets, limestone crags and quiet interiors by painters including John Atkinson Grimshaw and Jenny Nyström give the candlelit mystery its period atmosphere.

In this quietly ironic and warmly reflective tale, Hans Christian Andersen turns his attention from fairy kingdoms to the everyday theater of human character.
A Cheerful Temper is the story of a man who inherits from his father not wealth, nor status, but something far rarer — a disposition inclined toward good humor. The father, a hearse driver who led funeral processions with a round, sunlike face that discouraged despair, leaves behind a legacy of perspective rather than property.
The narrator wanders between two companions: the newspaper and the churchyard. In the pages of the Intelligencer, he observes the bustling vanities of society. Among the gravestones, he studies the quiet conclusions of human folly — the irritable critic, the ornamental aristocrat, the miser, the gossip, the dreamer who died clutching an idea no one ever heard.
With gentle satire and philosophical calm, Andersen invites the listener to view life from a steadier vantage point. What irritates in the moment fades in the long view. What seems monumental shrinks with time. Good temper, the narrator suggests, is not naïveté — it is wisdom practiced daily.
Narrated with warmth and clarity by Mike Polischuk, this timeless meditation blends humor and reflection in a way only Andersen can achieve.
