Sinopse

E. T. A. Hoffmann's "Weird Tales" emerges as a quintessential collection of gothic and fantastical narratives, blending elements of the macabre with the enchanting. Hoffmann's stylistic prowess is evident in his intricate prose, where he masterfully intertwines psychological depth with surreal, often dreamlike settings. This anthology, rich in themes of duality and the irrational, positions itself within the Romantic literary movement, echoing the era's fascination with the uncanny and the subconscious. Readers will encounter a world where reason falters, yielding to the whims of imagination and the supernatural, exemplifying Hoffmann's knack for creating compellingly eerie atmospheres. E. T. A. Hoffmann, a pivotal figure in German literature, drew from his diverse background as a composer, jurist, and visual artist, imbuing his works with a multifaceted perspective on human experience. His own struggles against societal norms and personal adversities heavily influenced his exploration of the uncanny. Hoffmann's unique ability to capture the intersection of reality and fantasy reflects his profound engagement with the complexities of the human psyche, making his work a critical precursor to modern horror and fantasy literature. For those intrigued by the interplay of dreams, madness, and the bizarre, "Weird Tales" stands as a mesmerizing introduction to Hoffmann's literary genius. This collection will resonate with readers seeking a deep dive into the depths of human emotion intertwined with the extraordinary, solidifying Hoffmann's legacy as a master of the weird and the wonderful. Brought to you by Altrusian Grace Media and narrated by Matthew Schmitz, and includes a fully immersive cinematic music score.
"The Doom That Came to Sarnath" (1920) is a fantasy short story by American writer H. P. Lovecraft. It is written in a mythic/fantasy style and is associated with his Dream Cycle. It was first published in The Scot, a Scottish amateur fiction magazine, in June 1920.
According to the tale, more than 10,000 years ago, a race of shepherd people colonized the banks of the river Ai, in a land called Mnar, forming the cities of Thraa, Ilarnek, and Kadatheron (not to be confused with Kadath), which rose to great intellectual and mercantile prowess. Craving more land, a group of these hardy people migrated to the shores of a lonely and vast lake at the heart of Mnar, founding the city of Sarnath.
But the settlers were not alone. Not far from Sarnath was the ancient grey-stone city of Ib, inhabited by a strange race who had descended from the Moon. Lovecraft described them as "in hue as green as the lake and the mists that rise above it.... They had bulging eyes, pouting, flabby lips, and curious ears, and were without voices." These beings worshipped a strange god known as Bokrug, the Great Water Lizard, although it was more their physical form that caused the people of Sarnath to despise them.
The citizens of Sarnath killed all the creatures inhabiting Ib, destroyed the city, and took their idol as a trophy, placing it in Sarnath's main temple. The next night, the idol mysteriously vanished, and Taran-Ish, the high-priest of Sarnath, was found dead. Before dying, he had scrawled a single word onto the empty altar: "DOOM"....

In this new collection, Richard Thomas has crafted fourteen stories that push the boundaries of dark fiction in an intoxicating, piercing blend of fantasy, science fiction, and horror. Equally provocative and profound, each story is masterfully woven with transgressive themes that burrow beneath the skin. - A poker game yields a strange prize that haunts one man, his game of chance now turned into a life-or-death coin flip. - A set of twins find they have mysterious new powers when an asteroid crashes in a field near their house and the decisions they make create an uneasy balance. - A fantasy world is filled with one man’s desire to feel whole again, finally finding love, only to have the shocking truth of his life exposed in an appalling twist. - A father and son work slave labor in a brave new world run by aliens and mount a rebellion that may end up freeing them all. - A clown takes off his make-up in a gloomy basement to reveal something more horrifying under the white, tacky skin. Powerful and haunting, Thomas’s transportive collection dares you to examine what lies in the darkest, most twisted corners of human existence and not be transformed by what you find. A foreword by Brian Evenson is included.

"Hardcore horror fans should find this blood-splattered novel highly satisfying: Stephen King's Cujo meets Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds." -Paul Goat Allen, BlueInk Review
Derek Rains, a nature-loving real estate developer in Colorado, has just adopted a Xolo (also known as a Mexican hairless dog, revered by the Aztecs as the guardians of the underworld). But when the Xolo bites his young son, Derek is forced to abandon the dangerous dog in the woods, where it is picked up by members of a dog-fighting ring.
Horrified to see humans forcing dogs to kill each other, the Xolo taps into the ancient powers of its species to convince the other dogs to band together and kill the humans. Now free and wanting revenge on the humans who hurt and abandoned them, the dogs begin killing humans who imprison dogs, growing their ranks in the process.
With the killings spreading across the county, the local sheriff’s suspicions fall on Derek, whose dog was the only vicious animal in the county before these attacks. Derek refuses to believe that his animal could be responsible for so much carnage, but when his young son almost becomes the xolo’s next victim, Derek must face up to the facts and put an end to the carnage.
XOLO is a fast-paced but literary creature horror novel with a mixture of ferocious action, cinematic atmosphere, Lovecraftian undertones, and well-developed characters, which is the first in a planned trilogy.
