  Through his eclecticism, William Morris (1834-1896) was one of the most emblematic personalities of the nineteenth century. Painter, architect, poet and engineer, wielding the quill as well as the brush, he jolted Victorian society by discarding standards established by triumphant industry. His commitment to the writing of the Socialist Manifesto was the logical result of the revolution he personified in his habitat, the form of his design and the colours he used. Forerunner of twentieth-century designers, he co-founded with John Ruskin the Arts and Crafts movement. As an independent man, William Morris led the way to Art Nouveau and later Bauhaus. Through the essential body of his written and visual work, Arthur Clutton-Brock’s masterwork deciphers the narrow relationship between ideals and creation, as well as between evolution and revolution.

  Since pre-independence days, Geylang Serai has served as a hub for the Malay and Indonesian communities in Singapore.  
   
  It was home to the Malay Village, built in 1989 to showcase kampong life and sell ethnic handicrafts, traditional costumes and souvenirs. In the fasting month of Ramadan leading up to Hari Raya Puasa, the area comes alive with performances and bazaars, as families shop for new clothes and delicious goodies. 
   
  Follow the artists from Urban Sketchers Singapore through this eastern neighbourhood as they document its key landmarks and scenes of daily life. After you’ve worked up an appetite, feast your eyes on the sketchers’ delicious depictions of nasi padang, biryani , satay, otah and other Malay and Indian dishes at the two-storey Geylang Serai New Market and Food Centre.

  The earliest form of temple was a mere hut of plaited wickerwork, serving as a shrine for the symbols of the god; the altar but a mat of reeds. The earliest temples evolve from a wall built round the name-stela, which was afterward roofed in. With the advent of the New Empire the temple-building became of a much more complicated character, though the essential plan from the earliest period to the latest remained practically unchanged. The simplest form was a surrounding wall, the pylon or entrance gateway with flanking towers, before which were generally placed two colossal statues of the king and two obelisks, then the innermost sanctuary, the naos, which held the divine symbols. This was elaborated by various additions, such as three pylons, divided by three avenues of sphinxes, then columned courts, and a hypostyle or columnar hall. In this way many of the Egyptian kings enlarged the buildings of their predecessors.
