Sinopse

Whether attending decidedly awkward dinner parties or hayseed weddings complete with karaoke and inebriated attendants, or risking life and limb to aid the impoverished in Belize and Peru (with near-drastic results of misspoken Spanish), there’s a story for everyone in this third installment of Dr. Carroll James’s series of rollicking and touching memoirs.
And Nothing but the Tooth offers up a continuation of bizarre episodes during Dr. James’s forty-plus years of dental practice—including perhaps the worst hires in employment history. On the personal side, we catch a glimpse of some questionable family lineage, a hilarious first ski trip, amateur sheep herding, and a soggy camping trip sure to test a marriage. As always, we get to tag along with young Carroll as he gets into summer mischief with his cousins at his grandparents’ home in the backwoods of Nealy Ridge, VA, this time toying with a treasure chest of found explosives and almost—but not quite—getting away with it.

A biography of the English educator, dictionary writer, and celebrated author of A Month in the Country.

J.L. Carr was the most English of Englishmen: headmaster of a Northamptonshire school, cricket enthusiast and campaigner for the conservation of country churches. But he was also the author of half a dozen utterly unique novels, including his masterpiece, A Month in the Country, and a publisher of some of the most eccentric—and smallest—books ever printed.

Byron Roger’s acclaimed biography reveals an elusive, quixotic and civic-minded individual with an unswerving sympathy for the underdog, who led his schoolchildren through the streets to hymn the beauty of the cherry trees and paved his garden path with the printing plates for his hand-drawn maps, and whose fiction is quite remarkably autobiographical. Much more than the life of a thoroughly decent man, The Last Englishman is a comic and touching anatomy of the best kind of Englishness.

    Praise for The Last Englishman

“A miniature masterpiece of social history.” —Simon Jenkins, The Times (UK)

“A fine biography. . . . Rogers has done a wonderful job.” —Daily Telegraph (UK)

“Conveying the significance of the author of Carr’s Dictionary of Extraordinary Cricketers to anyone unfamiliar with his books, or what may now fairly be called his myth, was always going to be difficult. Somehow, Roger’s has managed it.” —D. J. Taylor, Sunday Times (UK)

“A great success, and more life-affirming than F. R. Leavis’s entire output.” —Independent on Sunday (UK)

Iris Grace is a beautiful little girl who, from a very young age, barely communicated, avoided social interaction with other people, and rarely smiled. Both before her diagnosis of autism and after, she seemed trapped in her own world, unable to connect with those around her. One day, her mother brought home a Maine Coon kitten for Iris. Thula immediately bonded with Iris, knowing right away how to assuage Iris when she became overstimulated, when to intervene when Iris became overwhelmed, and how to provide distraction when Iris started heading toward a meltdown. With Thula's companionship, Iris began to talk and interact with her family. Inspiring and touching, Iris Grace follows the struggles and triumphs of a family - and a miracle cat - as they learn to connect with an amazing child.

Penned anonymously during the 1800s by a wealthy English gentleman called Walter, it offers an eye and thigh opening account of life behind closed doors in the Victorian era. Banned from publication for its extreme and explicit content for nearly a century, My Secret Life has now come to life in the 21st century as an immersive audio book, narrated and scored by film composer Dominic Crawford Collins.?After breakfast. • An inspection of Rosa. • Her figure, face, and pudenda. • An expensive room. • A frig stopped. • Looking-glasses not appreciated. • She feels my sperm. • Fresh lodgings. • Conversations on fucking. • Her youthful knowledge. • Stiff pricks in little boys. • Precocity in young girls. • Opportunities in the humble classes. • I make notes of the intrigue. • Her suspicions. • Clothes bought her. • My pleasure with her, and her indifference. • Her relatives written to. • She goes to them. • Her brief letter. • Full-grown Paphians • Their cunts compared with Rosa's.

This is a collection of stories from my long career as a mailman. From the big city streets of Chicago, I transferred to the small, river town city of Kachuda, Wisconsin. It was there I wanted to make my life, raise my family, and put down roots and become part of a real community!
I comment on the changing Postal Service as well, and how it has devolved, but the main thrust is the characters in this wonderful community in the Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin.
Kind of a Postman James Herriot is what I am!
