Summary

Aurora Award FinalistBest New Horror SelectionCath, a beautiful young sidewalk artist, is driven by a mysterious hunger that feeds from the portraits she draws of her victims. Joe loves Cath still, but as Cath’s hunger grows, so does Joe’s fear--fear that one day she may draw him down."The best of the bunch…a haunting variant on the vampire legend with an understated and brutal ending." —Publishers Weekly“Highlights among the stories include Douglas Smith's delightfully creepy ‘By Her Hand, She Draws You Down,’ about a young woman who is driven by a mysterious hunger to sketch people and steal their life force as her horrified lover looks on.” —Booklist"I was reminded of the tone of some of Harlan Ellison’s best work…where many of the protagonists seemed to be the unwitting victims of dark, irrational forces.” —The Fix“...a title that rules. ...psychic vampirism, creepy street performers, the horrors of small coastal towns. And Smith took the story somewhere that surprised me. The twist is sustained.” —Jay Lake, Tangent Online“...examines vampirism from an unusual and genuinely horrifying angle.” —SF Site Review"Well done and with a nice twist…" —Fantasy Book Critic"Haunting passages and scenes..." —Strange Horizons“...a chilling, weird tale of an artist with a great hunger.” —The Haunted Weblog“Familiar subjects...dealt with in an original form and with a final turn that will surprise you.” — Bibliopolis

Enjoy this short story by Mace Styx:
"Still, despite my mother’s warnings and the strange feelings that her less specific warnings gave me. I didn’t want to look like a coward in front of Andy and Mike, so instead of protesting or sharing what my mom had said. I instead clambered up the iron ladder, plonked myself down cross legged on the roof and prepared myself for the process by cracking open a preparatory beer. Andy, as always, was marvelously melodramatic.
He pulled out the board with an almost hushed reverence, clearing the space on the ground of the loose stones and bottle caps we had left on our previous visits. Laying a small black cloth onto the ground as a cushion, before placing the board gently on top of it. Mike and I shared a glance and a knowing smile as Andy produced the planchette and broke into an introductory speech that wouldn’t have been out of place in a Hammer horror movie.
He warned us that the Ouija board was a strange and mysterious object, that the spirits could be both temperamental and deceptive. That we might not get any responses at all and that while speaking to the dead might offer us great insight, they might also terrify us with the naked truth of their answers.
“Naked”? Mike echoed, his hormones jumping into action at the slightest suggestion of anything raunchy."

A forest of blood and corpses. The land of a cold-blooded psychopath.
In Black River Forest, it’s best not to wander too far off the beaten track. There’s no telling what you might find.
Mia and Oliver have long wanted to explore the forest, and one cold, rainy October day, a week before their fifth anniversary of the day they met, they finally make the trip.
But they’ve heard the rumors as well. The haunting. A psychopath hidden somewhere amidst the towering trees. Too many missing. Too few answers.
It’s only rumors, though. Stories. And stories can’t hurt you. Yet as Mia and Oliver venture deeper into the Black River Forest, they’ll soon discover that there’s more haunting this quiet woodland than hikers and bears.
The psychopath is very real. And he’s excited to meet them.
From Jaydeep Shah, author of Tribulation, the first book of the Cops Planet series, “The Haunting of Black River Forest” is a bloody, spine-chilling story best read with the lights on.

A charming Yuletide romance painted with gorgeous Regency detail.   Elizabeth Gore-Langton was hardly in a position to refuse accompanying Lady Astley to the Christmas party at Stenton Castle. After all, a paid companion must follow her employer’s wishes. It scarcely mattered that Elizabeth would be forced to face the man who had unknowingly broken her heart years ago during her first season. Most likely, the Duke of Stenton wouldn’t even recognize her. But once she looked up into his dark, piercing eyes, she knew this was a man who forgot very little and forgave even less. Well, she was no longer a blushing schoolgirl, and the dashing duke would soon find that a broken heart, once mended, could be formidable indeed!   Clive Rowland, Fifth Duke of Stenton, was in no mood for a holiday gathering. But the Christmas gala would provide the perfect cover as he investigated reports that French agents were doing a brisk trade in stolen documents along the Sussex coast. It would be devilishly difficult to play the host while tracking down traitors, but Clive was up to the task—provided he kept his wits about him and didn’t get distracted by yule logs and Christmas folderol . . . or the delightful charms of the disturbingly familiar Elizabeth. She was hiding something, to be sure, and Clive liked nothing better than unveiling a lady’s secrets!

The Masque of the Red Death is a story by Edgar Allan Poe. A terrible disease called the Red Death has struck the country. It’s incredibly fatal, horribly gruesome, and it’s already killed off half the kingdom. But the ruler of these parts, Prince Prospero, doesn’t seem to care about his poor, dying subjects. Instead, he decides to let the kingdom take care of itself while he and a thousand of his favorite knights and ladies shut themselves up in a fabulous castle to have one never-ending party. Wine, women, music, dancing, fools – Prospero’s castle has it all. After the last guest enters, no one else can get in – the Prince has welded the doors shut. That means no one can get out, either...
